This is obviously an Insurance related question. The bike I like is 2 hours and half away. It is a reliable dealer so if we have a deal with the part exchange and price I would like to ride it home!
Is that even possible? Is there any other way to avoid the double trip?
Thanks

Tax and insurance can be done online before you leave, or over the phone for a change over of insurance. Pay for it and ride it away if it has an MOT.

He's seen you coming, a person that's just passed his big bike test and wants something new.. he's offered a price for your bike of which he'll increase when he sells it and is more than willing to praise the model that your set on buying telling you how good it is and how it's been serviced and comes with 12 months MOT before its sold to you, excellent package, when you want?.. I don't mean to be an ass i'm just saying you're offering the guy money that's why he's so happy... as long as you're sure and all.

Insurance can be taken out over the phone providing nothing more than your card details and is instantly activated.. the only issue I encountered with this is my dealer wanted to see the insurance certificate witch meant waiting for insurance to send it over and then the dealer print it out etc, worth asking about.. if you've got a phone with internet you could just forward the email the insurance send you to the shops email.

In my experience it isn't a quick process but as long as you and the shop make an agreed date in advance it should be possible, more so than just turning up and wanting to buy a bike on the spot.

lolwhut? They can piss off. If I've handed over my money, I'm leaving with my bike. If I haven't handed over the money and they demand this, I would tell them to keep it.

I have had to prove insurance before on bikes as well

Also most bikes from a dealer get serviced and not before they leave

Never ridden one away same day

The only reason they need proof of insurance is to tax the bike.

The easiest way is to get quotes online with comparethemarket etc, using all the correct details including the actual registration of the bike. Take the quote reference with you to the dealer. If you buy the bike, the phone call to arrange the cover will be super quick. If the dealer wants proof of insurance just put the phone on speaker.

What's VED got to do with them? They're not the keeper, and if they were, the change of keeper to you would cancel it.

Agreed with the "give me the keys if you want your money". I've done it with a car back in the posty-certificates days when the insurer was being tardy, although I did pen the dealer a nice letter accepting responsibility for the car and absolving them of their sins, pie Iesu domine, dona eis requiem.

It shouldn't even be an issue now though. Prep the insurance online; activate; tax online; ride.

To be honest I think the dealers are reliable comparing other ebay sellers. I haven't walked into their shop yet.
I am selling the cbf125 to my girlfriend lodger he is feeling a bit down and we could have some nice rides.

Soooo how much do you think I should pay for this bike?
I wanted something between a winter commuter and a nice bike I can feel proud to have as first big big bike.

Looks VERY nice. But if you commute on it through the winter it will need much maintenance and plenty of luck if it's not going to be tatty by April. Would it make more sense to get something a bit scruffier from a private seller for a lot less money? Perhaps with a full fairing so you don't have to clean cack out of all the engine crevices? (There's no right answer to this question, I'm just playing devil's advocate.)

Perfectly reasonable choice. Price isn't bad for a dealer bike with that mileage.

Any explicit warranty, or just your statutory rights?

Tyre tread is visible but I can't really tell the depth.

First MOT was due on September 1st and hasn't been done. Presumably they've had it in since before then, so they don't have buyers queuing up. If they tell you that they do, then they're bloody liars, but then again... dealer.

Assume that any MOT they put on it means nothing and give it a good going over, but at that mileage you shouldn't expect to find much wrong.

No reasons that I can see not to have it.

Well it sucks passing the test in the beginning of the winter. With crash bars and protectors and a mountain of acf50 I expect it to survive.
I really want an ABS machine I do a lot of night riding and all conditions.
Edit: thanks rogerborg for the help.

I really like that the bike seems so well preserved with no crappy mods.

Pretty sure you won't be able to tax it yourself without the registration document IIRC so the dealer does it for you before letting you drive off and for that they need proof that it's insured (as op talks about part exchange I'm assuming this is an actual dealership and not just some guy).

I've had to do this on every car I've ever bought from a dealer, so not surprised one wants to do it for a bike. I'd imagine there a liability worry for letting you drive off uninsured too (that part is pure speculation),

Whenever I've bought either a car or a bike from a dealership there's always been at least a few days between purchase and handover for them to do mechanical checks, servicing, etc... You pay a deposit first and then the remainder when you pick it up.

Depends on how big the dealer is perhaps, but if it's anything more than a one man outfit, you'll likely have to fit into their sales process.

I'd offer them two grand and when they laugh walk away.

And keep walking away. It isn't worth any more than that.

Oi, grandad, we're on the decimal system now, put your jar of farthings away.

3 years old, barely run in, ABS, presumably a full year's MOT on sale, dealer "warranty". Sure, try and chisel a bit more off, but where would you get more for less?
