If these were British police I'd say it's disgraceful, but it's not, and the context is very different. The Palestinian rioters are more like paramilitary combatants than civilians, and given the opportunity they would be extremely brutal and inhumane. Within this context what the Israel troops did was reasonable.

Israel is in a constant fight for survival.

Not figuratively. Not metaphorically. A literal fight.

If the Israelis ever lose, once, then every Israeli jew will be slaughtered, down to the last man, woman and child.

Those weren't flower petals that were being thrown. They were rocks, thrown as hard as possible with the intent to injure, maim and if at all possible, kill.

Had the situation been reversed and an Israeli been isolated among the rock chuckers, he would have been killed. They would not have shown any restraint.

So no, I don't think that was an over-reaction at all. If anything it showed astonishing self control to fire just over their heads rather than popping those shrieking hate filled ragefaces apart like over ripe melons.

I do find it amusing they are happy to do it all in front of the cameras though. Can you imagine if that was soldiers in Afghan or Iraq, in the same fight for survival. In fact you don't have to imagine...

I'm not convinced Isreal has to expand to create a border from the rockets. When they push their occupied land border further into non-isreali land, I thought they built homes there rather than creating a safety net.

That's where the quandary comes in, there isn't a fixed number of Israeli jews. They will have children, and more jews will move there.

Please don't mistake the explanation for a justification. I'll shed no tears if Israel falls under the swarm or has a 6 million degree heat wave. But they're under siege and playing for keeps and it's ludicrous to expect them apologise for administering a kicking to rock chuckers who are literally trying to kill them.
