New rider - help

Hi all,

I'm wonder if you can help me!

I work and leave in london and I have decided to buy a scooter instead of taking the tube for an hour ( I'm 17 miles home to work - 34 round trip)

I have no experience whatsoever with any sort of bikes.

I've always drove, I have a car license since 2000. Since I renewed it, it now shows that on my licence that I can drive AM and A (79.03 - restricted to tricycles) vehicles.

Will this mean that I can drive Yamaha Tricity -3 wheeler 125 Cc? It says that I need a A1 licence however the A overtakes the A1 even if it's only for tricycles, right?

Contacted DVLA who told me I could drive it but I wasn't very convinced.

Can anyone shed some light?

Will this bike be a good starting point for someone without experience apart from renting scooters whilst on holiday in Spain.

Looking forward for some tips

Why not just do a CBT? Then you can go for any scooter/bike that's 125cc - and it's a good stepping stone to big bikes.

On topic though, I really don't know the answer.

Yes you can ride ANY tricycle on car licence.

Yes any bike is good starting point.

Two front wheel scooters are good all year winter commuters, obviously two front wheels better than one on icy winter roads.

Having said that you can do CBT 1 day course fro £100 and have any 125 scooter or motorcycle. For London I would say buy a scooter. With CBT done you will have more choices.

Information is confusing...I read somewhere that we can't drive Yamaha Tricity on a car license, but DVLA said I can drive ANY tricycle.

Piagio 500 is way over budget!

Polarbear made a valid point. Anyone can confirm that info?

I have the A licence with a 79-03 restricted to tricycles so I'm adamant I'm covered however not 100% sure....

Bingo. Not all three wheeled vehicles are trikes.

<FACT>Some 3 wheelers are 2 wheelers but can be made into 3 wheelers by fitting spacers between wheels 2 and 3.</FACT>

Here's what I'd suggest. Count the wheels, and if you come up with three, ride/drive it.

according to all the google pages for "Yamaha tricity legal on a car licence" the answer is no


the front wheels are too close together so its registered as a bike not a trike

even the piaggio mp3s have to be the LT version or be widened with spacers but then they become a different class of vehicle so need different mots etc
