PostPosted: 15:25 - 10 Oct 2015    Post subject: Cooker keeps blowing fuse Reply with quote

My many year old cooker (Hotpoint GW62) has developed a problem where it keeps blowing the fuse (3A). Note the main fuse box doesn't trip, it's just the fuse in the plug that pops as soon as I plug it in. I've just gone through four brand new fuses.

It's a gas cooker with gas oven and grill. Any thoughts on what could be causing this? I've done some interwebbing but most similar issues are occurring on electric cookers that use heating elements.

Help, advise or solution appreciated.

Thumbs Up

Do you require the electric for a gas cooker?!

3A seems low. Even my coffee maker is 13amp Shocked it chews 5A to pieces in seconds.

Just to ignite the gas.

is it only when you use the igniter or as soon as you plug it in?

Sorry for late reply.

Yes, the power is just for the igniter and oven light.

The fuse originally blew and I replaced it with another 3A. That lasted about a week and now it blows fuses as soon as I plug it in. Literally can hear the pop as soon as the switch on the socket is flicked on.

Nothing has changed on the cooker as far as I can tell.

Could be, although I'm not even able to get to try the sparky thing as fuse blows as soon as I plug it in.

Do you need to plug it in for the cooker to work?

Got to be a short somewhere but could you get a handheld sparky thing and just leave it unplugged?

Not necessary to plug it in to use the cooker but it is a bit of a hassle particularly to use the oven as you have to reach deep inside the oven with the gas on which can get a bit dangerous.

I'd start by renewing the whole cable into the hob. It's likely the cable may have suffered some internal
heat damage especially being in close proximity to 2 nearby heat sources over time. Alternatively I'd
bet you have water earthing out the ignition spark points. Has something boiled over recently?
Or has it been VERY thoroughly cleaned recently. I was called out to a hob in a womans house where the
same fault was occurring only it was tripping the RCD circuit breaker at the fuseboard rather than the one
in its 3 PIN PLUG TOP (@Stinkwheel). Anyway it turned out she had cleaned it to bejeezus and back and
gotten the internal wiring wet, a blast with my heat gun to dry it out and after leaving it to dry out fully over
night I plugged it back in next day and voila. No fault.

^^This.
It simply isn't worth the hassle of dismantling a cooker for anything you can live without.
(Obviously to use on your cooker, not Paddy's mum's)

How many fecking cooker threads do you need? Shocked

Very Happy

The wires to the igniter/sparker doofur may have shorted. Wear and tear can chaff through the fibreglass sheaths. A washing machine near the cooker can vibrate the floor enough to provide movement for this. The wires should be routed and clipped into place to avoid sharp edges but who knows what effect time has had on it.

May be a bad flex from 220 outlet to cooker.

Have you still got the manual for the pig?

To be honest 'Cansa' you do seem to do things just to get a rise out of people. Not as bad as some of the other forum wankers (who seem to have been banned?), but you do sometimes do it. And giving negative karma to really old posts shows a way more childish attitude, and mega butthurt.

Have I got this right...?

Dave70 is pissed because I dished back some karma at him and I am posting pics in reply to some of MCN's asinine posts.

'Lord Percy' is pissed and trying to start a bandwagon because I wouldn't agree with him in the "washing machine drama" thread.

Yeah, I think I've got it right.
