Why do top boxes increase insurance so much? Is is because they attract thief's?

Yep, surely not declaring it would then invalidate your insurance? What's the deal then? Do people just not bother?

you have a duty of disclosure .. in most incidences the company will not investigate in the event of a claim... over a certain value they will particularly if they are lookin to absolve themselves of payin out a large sum of money.. such as a third party claim for personal injuries..

It invariably hikes the insurance, it's unlikely they will ever know unless you're involved in a bike ending accident whereby the bike may end up in the hands of the insurer. At that point, it's probably the least of your worries.

The top box and it's contents will not be covered by the policy, but the bike will.

The underwriter has to prove you intentionally set out to deceive them by not telling them.

When I spoke to the insurer they said that the top box could cause damage to the bike if it was dropped / crashed and I wouldn't be covered. They said that it could effect any claim relating to personal accident cover. I have taken it off just so they don't have anything against me.

Strange that tail tidy, bar ends, screens, mirrors, seats, stickers are all allowed and don't have to be declared.

The simple thing to do is not be at fault.

If a 3rd party hits you , you're claiming on their insurance.

I declared mine. No apparent increase to premium. But then again I also declared my age and no claims too.

Me too, I thought that a hundred quid (give or take a few pence) was not unreasonable for an 1100 - especially when considering the modded exhaust, paintwork, brakes and carbs Mr. Green

I have never told 'them' I have a top box.
It's a factory fit so not an accessory. Is it? Confused

Still not tellin' them though.

Would you also declare that you ride with a rucsack? which could be said far higher risk due to injury. Does the lower risk without a topbox imply they think rucsacks are less risk, or they just dont pay out? Laughing

Perhaps better if they ask do you carry any luggage? stuff your sandwiches inside your jacket, counts as added protection? You should not need to disclose every little thing and have a risk associated against it, like pillion cover.

Anything you tell them is a price increase. Consider if the thing is reasonably expected, for example a two seater bike carrying two people vs bolting on a +200hp turbo.

My experience with mods:

(1) Phoned up, declared mod, payed monies, paperwork sorted.

and then

(2) Phoned up, change a couple of details, payed monies, paperwork did not include mods.

So erm, what's the point again?

An interesting point you made.

How many people provide details for insurance and then get the policy back with the details wrong?
As a Punter you get humped for 'inaccuracies' but it's OK for them baistirts. Mad

Have you look at your bike with top box on it?

It is a fashion crime and should be punished Laughing

Me I would have made you pay double and apologise publicly.

Do I dare ask how much you carry for you to need a topbox daily?

Waterproofs, lunch, disc lock and a big chain and padlock as I leave the bike in a city centre.

Can easily be done with a backpack.

Have one and have used for a while, strap round the front and adjustable straps so it doesn't just slide off, is very waterproof and has withheld all weather I've ridden in.

Padlock and disc lock in the front compartment and then the rest in the main part.

I'll lock my helmet to the outside of the bike and stash my armoured textile jacket in the topbox, making me look more like the run of the mill fat bastards whilst going about my business in town rather than looking like a fat bastard accuntant (which I'm not Wink )

Stuff that. No chance I'm gonna carry a 12kg Pragmasis 16mm chain and Squire padlock on my back! Ignoring the huge weight and back ache, just looking at the hole in my leather jacket a pair of front door keys did when in inside pocket during a previous low speed off (<20mph), there is no change I'm going to strap a tonne of metal chain and padlocks to me when I'm hooning down the road on the bike... That's surely a recipe for fecked ribs and/or internal organs?!

Besides the top box acted a pretty good crash protection during a few crashes. Givi plate snapped in half once, sent box across several lanes of A13. But on other occasions, it's protected all the rear fairing. Slightly bent Give bars, and scuffs down side of box, but rear of bike still in good nick.
