Got a VFR400 - I'd like to wheelie it.

Is it bad for the engine as I've heard it starves the pistons of oil and kaboom.

I'm not talking holding them for long, just a few seconds then down again.

Cheers!

No you'd have to do it for a lot longer than that for it to be an issue for oil starvation.

How long we talking?

Will doing it over and over do damage?

Like lots and lots of a few seconds, that adds up right?

No, no it doesn't.

Put bike down again and the engine has access to all the oil it needs.

Just don't worry about it - you're not going to total the engine through oil starvation

You'll fuck the drive train because first gear is super tall and the engine has no low down power, so they only way you'll pop it up is through abuse (I.e. Revving to 10k and abusing the clutch).

Yeah I get to about 8-9k then pop the clutch and it comes up no issues, doesn't feel clunky or damaging in that respect it's smooth.

I don't think you need to worry too much about the engine, though clutch abuse might be significant on a VFR400R in trying to do decent wheelies.

The Starboyz got through a fair few CBR 918cc Blade engines, from oil starvation, but they only classed a long wheelie as one over 6miles so I heard.

No.

If you have to ask the question, the answer is most likely "a hell of a lot longer than you can wheelie".
It takes a while for the oil to stop circulating.

Note that some VFRs (definitely the NC30) have pretty high first gears.

You should really talk to Binge. He had quite a knack for wheelying the NC30s. Had them up quite quite some time as I remember. Didn't really bother the engine all that much according to him.

Graham88 and Luke used to abuse one of those with wheelie practice. Trashed one of the cylinder heads from oil starvation. Don't do it is my advice.

A lot of you seem to be talking about the clutch and long gears?

What's that got to do with it?

The wheelies I do are smooth and I know better than to hold them for too long.

But I'm beginning to question it a bit. I've been doing them for a while on the VFR but just wondered if it would do damage Shocked

Bear in mind that these were the days when Binge looked like he was a reject from Son of Dork or Busted... I think half the forum were recovering from the pop-punk days! Wink Thumbs Up

wheelies damage things, even smooth off the throttle wheelies eventually take their toll.

But they are damn good fun, and make you look super cool, (that is a fact, and not open for debate) so who gives a shit.

If you are in anyway mechanically sympathetic to your bike, and want it to last forever without replacing a lot of chains, back tyres, clutches, etc don't do wheelies.

Chains, clutches and tyres are easier to change than heads...

Maybe if you wheelie down a steep hill it'll be fine.

Really though, the oil pick-up is at the front of the sump, keep it topped up to max line, no less, maybe more. Not sure what angle would cause starvation, maybe go easy on the 12 o' clock wheelies.

Edit & disclaimer: I have an NC30 but have never wheelied it 'cause I'm a loser.

True, but if you are wheelying that much, you would probably want a more suitable bike all together.
