Hi all,

Just bought a Yam xj600, only 23k miles but problem is it smokes blue for a few minutes until warmed up. Can I use 20/50 oil and what brand or type do you recommend and would it reduce this blue smoking on start?

Once it warms up it's fine. Oh, one final question, any idea on costs to fix this?

Appreciate any comments, new rider here just passed DAS.

ty.

Leaky valve stem seals. Keep an eye on the oil level and top up when needed.

Thanks Dave. So valve stem seals then and not worth the trouble replacing? Too costly maybe?

its a head off job i think so would probably cost a fair chunk. if the smoke isn't constant then ride it until it really NEEEDS it.. just my 2p

I replaced the valve stem seals on mine (the 2 stroke paddy refers to...).

It didn't cure the problem, yet my compression was excellent, so I didn't believe it to be an issue further down. The gaskets I needed to buy were costly. I took a gamble and didn't do anything lower down as the parts were too expensive and I thought it to be the seals. I lost the gamble.

I'm the end I sold the bike for scrap money and bought something better. It wasn't really worth stripping it to find the issue, especially when you can buy engines for a similar cost to all of the parts you would need.

My wifes old divvy used to burn oil just like yours, when cold and you would also get a puff of smoke when shutting the throttle changing gear. It went on for a year like that until she sold it.

Just check the oil level regularly and don't overfill it.

Doing the valve stem oil seals involves time/gaskets/work, unless it's savage oil consumption just keep riding and topping it up as necessary. Don't make work for yourself with a task that's not guaranteed to cure your perceived problem. Lots of bikes use some oil, my mates Thunderace amongst 'em.

Brill thanks folks for the advice. The bike rides really well and looks and feels superb so I'll do as you suggest. I'll change the oil though to 20/50 as I suspect it had that in when i bought it, aka, no smoking at all.

Had an oil change and used the standard and since then it's bluey smoking on cold start but clears after 3 or 4 minutes.

Well, changed the iol to 20/50 and it seems worse now than before. Was smoking quite badly for a few minutes till it cleared.

Quite embarrassing, seeing clouds rolling around the bike, makes me want to walk off for five minutes till it clears!

So this may be valve guide seals then? Love the bike, need to get some costs to replace them I guess.

I'd think about going down the second hand engine route. You could always replace the seals in the other engine at your leisure then.

Yes thanks for that, sounds like an interesting idea. I've just ordered a haynes manual.
