Why is it surprising that a black person can be biased towards a religion? I'd maybe understand some controversy about a black person being racist....

Surely making assumptions based on race, like the assumption a black person would be 'racist'*, is in of itself a pretty racist train of thought?

*Obviously it's not racism to have a go at muslims, as muslims are not a race, they are a religious group. It would surely be religious discrimination.

If you want to really get your Guardian in a twist.

The lead in Verdis operatic version of Othello is very challenging and can only be sung by a handful of classical tenors. Most of whom are white.

The character Othello is a Moor, he's black, it's fundamental to the plot which is about his lack of acceptance as a stranger in a white society.

Traditionally therefore, the white singers playing the part of Othello have blacked up in makeup.

The latest version by the New York Met has a white guy singing the part of Othello but he is not blacked up.

So which bit should I be offended by?

1) A white guy playing Othello. But there aren't many (any?) black tenors capable of singing the part at that level.

2) A white guy blacking up to play Othello. But the fact Othello is black is fundamental to the plot.

3) A white guy NOT blacking up. Thereby removing the black guy from the story altogether.

Personally, I've met loads of black racists....and racists of other shades too. Like everything else, it's not down to the colour of a persons skin, it's what's inside their brains....or not........ and how they look at things, something a lot of folks seem to have problems getting their heads around. Maybe if we could turn people inside out, we'd end all the racial hatred Idea Could get a bit messy though Thinking

It need to get sorted cos...as we're all aware....eventually, the colour of the average persons skin will equal out and we'll all be the same shade of brown anyway Rolling Eyes

Racist views don't bother me. I feel freedom of thought brings so much more to the table. Thinking what is acceptable and politically correct is a big restriction to progress in general.

Does that mean that eventually we'll all end up being work-shy, knife-wielding, gun-totting, drug-dealing, child-raping fraudsters with a sense of entitlement?
I can't wait.

No, because....believe it or not, how we behave and what we do, is not determined by the colour of our skin. I know it's a steep learning curve, but stick with it, you'll get there in the end Wink

Does anyone actually hate people for the color of their skin though?

If you take the archetype of "the nigger", his skin color doesn't really come into it. The negative traits are supposedly being lazy, absent father, quick to anger, illogical and violent etc.

On that basis, there are niggers of all races and colors.

The problem lies not with hating "the nigger" (who isn't a very nice person tbh), but extrapolating it to mean that every black person is a nigger, which is obviously a falsehood.

For me, culture (or the lack of) is far more important than what you look like. I'd much rather be around non-whites who are friendly and civilised, than a bunch of white sink estate trash.
