Hello all
Not posted here often, but felt I needed to let off some steam..
Took my MOD 2 today and failed on "turning right, but not using an available filter lane". When he explained that to me/my instructor, I felt royally fed up, as at no point as a driver of 30 years, would I simply miss or choose to not use a filter lane.
Anyhoo, having read others in a similar situation, I'm putting it down to a bit of both, and rebooking, as I don't want to get hung up on this. The only thing that caused me to question the decision (with myself only, not the examiner) was the fact he wasn't the regular guy, but a locum, but maybe I'm looking for reasons outside, rather than within (bit of Yoda there?)..
Anyways, just letting off steam |

Just luck, but still feel unlike Mod1 which is formulaic, MOD2 is one of those 'mood of examiner' things, which sucks a bit.

Wasnt in St Helens was it? There is a very tiny one there with barely visible markings I almost missed and as they have not got a bike examiner there they use locums all the time.
Edit, never mind I just saw where you are on the map |

I do find the whole Motorcycle test process flawed though, which irritates me
You pass your CBT, so can legally ride a 125 anywhere, you pass your Theory, and MOD1, so have demonstrated an understanding of the highway code and ability to control a 600cc bike. Add to that I'm legally commuting to West London every day on a 125cc, yet, do not manage to pass some 'right of passage'. MOD2 seems a bit void to me.
On a separate note, I'm not sure if you're allowed to advertise here, but had had a great tyre repair today from a chap, so would that be against the rules? (I'm not advertising, just like to big him up as he was great). |

Oddly enough you will find he mood of he examiners has very little to do with it. Examiners, for the most part, are bikers, they also know how hard it is for us with the hoops we have to jump through and want to see bikers on the road. The examiners I know can tell within the first 10 minutes of a road ride whether the student has passed or not, the rest of the road ride is just process and if the student fails then it is something they have done themselves. After the first 10 minutes it is all down to the student to prove the examiner wrong or right.
| Harlin67 wrote: |

Except motorways. The CBT is just training so it is not a pass. You are trained and assessed by an instructor at a very basic level. The sole purpose is to make sure you are not a liability to yourself or other road users. For real world test ready stuff it is a non point you are makin.
| Harlin67 wrote: | you pass your Theory, |
So you read your highway code and have a bit of common sense.. That is all it means.
| Harlin67 wrote: | and MOD1, so have demonstrated an understanding of the highway code and ability to control a 600cc bike. |
In a privately enclosed area which is fully controlled with no other vehicles or indeed people in it apart from you and the guy with a clipboard.
| Harlin67 wrote: | Add to that I'm legally commuting to West London every day on a 125cc, yet, do not manage to pass some 'right of passage'. MOD2 seems a bit void to me.

Which brings me back to a CBT which needs retaken every 2 years. What your "void" means is you no longer have to take that CBT and are able to ride a bike of any capacity and not stuck on L plates forever. I am not sure if you noticed, that 600CC you took your mod 1 on, and hopefully, your training, is a whole lot different than the little 125 you can legally ride around on a CBT.
Module 1 is something that, while many people do not agree with it, is something that most people have actually used in their day to day life and they probably have not realised it. The only thin that has never been used by me is the figure of 8. I have done U turns. I have done avoidance, I have done emergency stops and I have done controlled braking. I have walked a bike before and anyone who has filtered has done the equivalent of a slalom without thinking about it as they pass between cars.
The 3 main things that fail a mod 2, the big 3 we call them, Indications, observations and road positioning. Seems you messed up on the 3rd. Dont sweat it, get over it and get on with it next time. Dont sit and try and blame the examiner, you are nothing more than a candidate and a number to him and the chances are he has forgotten you already. ____________________ illuminateTHEmind wrote: I am just more evolved than most of you guys... this allows me to pick of things quickly which would have normally taken the common man years to master

Yes I agree mostly. It just occurred to me today that on Monday, I'll be hacking down the A3, filtering in busy London traffic, and have been deemed capable to do so, yet, you still have some final hoop to jump through.
I'm cool with it, its not going to change, and even my 125 is 100% better than shuffling along on SouthWest Trains everyday |

You'll be pootling along the A3 on L plates, alone, without supervision which is a luxury afforded to us because of the CBT completion.
This is a luxury car drivers do not have on a provisional licence. As a car driver on L plates you MUST have a full licence holder who has held their licence for a minimum of 3 years, sitting beside you if you are driving.
You have been deemed, by an instructor, capable of doing so. This does not mean you are a good, or indeed safe and competent rider. This just means you are not a danger to any other road users and you can ride a bike at a basic level. The fact that you did not pass your test shows this.
But like I said, dont sweat it, I failed my mod 2 twice before passing on the 3rd attempt. I hold a better record as a DAS instructor. Since becoming DAS qualified in December I have had 1 person fail mod 1 and 1 person fail mod 2. So I must be doing something right. Not bad for a guy who could not pass his mod 2. ____________________ illuminateTHEmind wrote: I am just more evolved than most of you guys... this allows me to pick of things quickly which would have normally taken the common man years to master

I just feel quite strongly that even when I pass, I would have come away from the 'MOD 2' money sink with nothing other than annoyance. On my CBT, theory, and especially MOD1, I felt I had learnt something, improved. Now' I'm just having to throw fake life savers just to convince some examiner. I hate authority btw
I had 6 minors btw, one of them was turning left onto a main road. I was just slightly to the left of center. Apparently I should have been far left, enough to stop a bike passing me. Personally, I think that's unsafe, but I'd like your take on it.
EDIT: Having just read up on OSMPSL, I realise this is the taught way. Sadly, this was not covered other than a cursory mention on my DAS, which I think was due to the other chap having done a day prior to mine. Bugger. |

The main things that can fail you on mod 2 are:
Observations: Even a non biker knows most of these are process and not relative to real world riding but for the test they need done.
Indications: Forgetting to cancel them can and possibly will result in a car pulling out in front of you because they think you are turning when you are not. So leaving them on during a test is a fail.
Road positioning: When you are turning left, get all the way over to the left. Otherwise you are inviting people to come up the inside of you. Even an experienced biker will put himself in the safest position for a junction. I was in the wrong position on a right turn once, Just right of centre, I had a taxi stick it up the outside of me, also turning right. Needless to say the argument was a little colourful but ultimately had we collided it would have hurt me more than him.

Then you went to the wrong school. The day before mod 2 we make sure you are ready more than ready, for the test. This includes all observations, road positioning and indications. ____________________ illuminateTHEmind wrote: I am just more evolved than most of you guys... this allows me to pick of things quickly which would have normally taken the common man years to master

This positioning for a turn bothers me. It feels rote rather than rational.
Personally I'd rather position myself so that there isn't enough space for a car / van to get past me on either side. Bikes and pedalists are going to do what they're going to do, you can't stop them whatever you do.
Particularly on turning left, if you're positioned right in the gutter, sporting L plates, you're gagging to have Duwayne or Abu try to overtake you as you both turn left, because you're just some wanker on a moped, innit. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

How about a bicycle or other biker undertaking you as you're turning left or some idiot overtaking as you're turning right because either didn't see your indicators then? I'm hardly an expert in the theory, but it doesn't take a lot of imagination to work out why you're positioning yourself for a given manoeuvre as you do.
Unlike some of learning to drive a car, best I could tell everything tought on the DAS is there to prevent you becoming a statistic.
Forget about a scooter, even on a 600 "big bike" looking mean I've had people overtake me while doing 30 in a 30 for no other reason than me being on a bike, I'd much rather make damn sure I dominate whatever path I'm intending to take! |

Yey passed
Friday 13th, windy, rainy, but enjoyed the ride out!
Six minors, two for indicators (to early on a roundabout), two for speed, not sure if that was hesitation or not, and two for positioning
Thought I'd give Colin the Hornet a first ride when I got home, started him up, dead battery lol. Oh well, will have to wait for daylight tomorrow before we become properly acquainted |
