Allo,

Went out for a quick blast this morning with some mates and when I left my number plate was firmly fitted to the tail tidy. However along my travels it's been smashed off by something.

Now my mate said I should inform the police just in case somebody finds it and get up to no good?

What do you think... should I bother calling or forget the whole thing.

Cheers

I am sure they would love to hear your tale of woe.

Just order a new plate. Meh frankly.

The police would take this much notice:

No point telling police.

I had my number plate stolen once. I informed the police. A neighbour returned it the next day as they found it in their front garden. The police had apparently put a flag on it so that if they saw the plate, they would pull over the vehicle.

Once my plate was back I, I commuted to work a few times and passed many police cars. Not once did anybody take any notice. This was in London.

Additionally you have to consider how easy it is for someone to just buy your plate off of eBay if they actually want to do anything sinister.

lost mine before, just ordered a new one.

police are a joke. They found a stolen push bike near us a while ago and asked if they could leave it in our building as couldnt fit it in their car. We then had to ring them to remind them it was here and they even suggested did we want it. they eventually sent a van and two guys to collect it. No doubt the owner will never get it back.

That would be the smart thing to do, as it doesn't tip off your victim.

However, do bear in mind that thieves aren't generally:

1) Smart
2) In the habit of paying for anything

One point of reporting it would be so that you can cite your crime number when the NIPs start hitting the mat.

My old car plate was used in an armed robbery once. Thankfully I'd reported it lost/stolen. Don't know if it was actually lost or stolen though.

used to be quite common for crims to clock plates on bikes in dealers and use replica plates when being naughty, this was back in the days when you didn't need any ID to get a plate made

had a call once from scotland yard, "have you got this ZZR600 H123 ABC?" bike was for sale in the shop, cloned and used in armed robbery

also used to see one of the local tea leaves riding to work? on a GPX600, the reg plate was the same as a bike we had for sale, in the shop he rode past every morning

The flaw in requiring legit plate makers to put their details on the plate is that only legit plate makers will put their details on the plate.
