to part ex or not?

I have a test ride booked for a ktm Duke 390 after surprising myself that I fitted on one. The 0% for 3 years and bits of maintenance due my speed 4 make it a good fit for me if the test ride goes well. However I am unsure if part ex or not is worth it. I figured there's no movement on a bike with 3 years 0% so part ex might get me a good value. I love my speed four but it needs work that I am struggling to find time for and the ktm provides more riding than repairing time. However I don't want to lose 400-600 pound for shifting a bike on.

I was going to get a spankers zx6r from a dealer a few years back.
The guy offered me £400 part ex for my zxr400.
I sold it on ebay the next day for £1500.

But KTM 390... is gonna be gash, I say stick to your sig and go for a triple and sell your bike privately.

It's a question of whether the convenience of PXing is worth the value you lose.

Personally I'd price it for quick sale and sell it. £400-£600 is two years insurance for me so wouldn't want to lose that.

Depends how much it needs done and how obvious it is. It's also not the ideal time to sell - but it is a good time to buy, and not at full price no matter how tempting the finance looks.

I think it depends how much your insurance is. I lost about 300 pounds when i part exchanged my gz for the xv.

I got most of that back on insurance refund, particularly as mce fined me horrendously for passing test.

Getting to the dealership would have been 2 taxis and two trains, or an exercise in lift-begging. Easily £50.

Factor in any extra security you might need to keep an extra bike locked up, and any extra time and risk you have to put into the bike.

I'm old now insurance doesn't even break 3 figures. No mot for 4 years, 2 years warranty think I will have it providing the numbers add up as it is a nice bike

Don't bother with Part Ex IMO. It's just asking the dealer to mug you off twice.

Take the time to get your bike sold for a decent price.

I've owned a street triple and loved it but I think the ktm will be a better fit. The triple was asking to be nailed everywhere

I'm optimistic that there's some singles out there that are a total riot and more fun than any sportsbike four pot.

But from what your saying it really seems to be a case of 'The only way is triple'?

KTM have given some dealers some 2013 model stock of the 390 Duke. It's not the same as the 2015 model, even though they might tell you the spec is the same. Easy way to tell is the tyres, the new one has Diablo Rossos. The older stock has Metzelers on. (Also slipper clutch, sealed indicators and clocks, stronger engine internals, longer service interval)

Dealers don't enjoy, but will discount both models even with finance. Work on them, play them off against each other, tell them you're looking at a nearly new one rather than new, and that you don't need the finance (even if you do!). They don't care, it's just a method of payment to them. I reckon you can get £300 off either model.

i'd say most dealers want to make a good whack on most bikes, i've nearly always been offered £1000 less than what its worth.

I ALWAYS sell privately, just lazy to part ex if you ask me.

Oh, and about Part Ex. Avoid at all costs part ex-ing a bike. Think about it. You (the punter) are trying to sell a bike to a salesman. A professional spiv. Someone who does this professionally. You'll never win a proper deal. The most you can hope for is a reasonable trade in price, but then you'll pay book price for the new bike. Or they give you a discount on the book price, but about tree fiddy for your pride and joy.

The only way to play is to hold all your cards, close to your chest, in a death grip. Expect dealers to try their very hardest to shaft you.

Example: 390 Duke at a local dealer. Not new, 9 months old and 400 miles. They advertised it at £4500, which as we know is £500 over the new book price. I called them, test rode it, not talking about price until after I'd ranted it. He offered me £300 less than I knew I could get for my bike, I said I'm not interested in trading in anyway (all nonchalant, like). Then told them their pricing inconsistencies. Salesman looked. sheepish. Told me he'd match the 'new' price. I laughed and said what's the point? He knocked a further £250 off. So to recap, that's a 9 month old bike, with that much less manufacturers warranty, for £250 less. Obviously it's crap, deal isn't even remotely worthwhile, I'm out. I tell him so and he huffs a bit.

Next day the bike goes up for £3500 on their website. £250 less than he was 'offering' it to me for. Cheeky wazzock! Glad I redlined it in every gear now. (note to all - don't buy that bike, it will chuck it's guts up!)

Been offered a better deal than we steal any bike.com I'm sorry 500 quid for 1500 bike is horrific. I think I will see what I can get. I know what I am after and just got to remember that I can keep the speed four and put the money to it even if it feels like money down the drain. However I think this speed four has seen better days.


Ps is that ktm advertised in Bristol way at a dealers

If not in a rush for the capital or needing the parking space for the new bike, I would sooner sell privately with most bikes.

There's not many bikes out there to choose from compared to cars for given model and year, and those will be spread around the country, meaning to me that you should see more interest.

Also many dealers I visit, seem these days to have acres of 1-10year old used machinery all over their floor space and few new bikes on display as the trade off. I'm not sure why this is, but my suspicions are because used bikes are more expensive than 10years ago and harder to find since mass shipments out of the country, pushing up the price of everything. Add to that now bikes have in 5years gone up a lot due the Japanese exchange rates.

But ultimately if your offering your 5year old CBRYZX to a dealer that already has 3 tidy ones in the shop, he's not going to offer you much for another one?

What do you expect for your speed 4 and what has the dealer offered?

I part exed my STR for the Tiger explorer. It was up on the forecourt for £500 more than they paid me. Not a lot considering they have no idea how long they are going to be lumbered with it and they had to valet it and was due a service.

Another thing is with these PCP contracts, we must be due a lot of 3/4 year old machinery hitting the forecourts as people trade up.

Surely prices are going to get depressed.
