so.... I've become heavily embroiled in the Honda MT50....

I had one when I was 16 and spent most of the period from 16-17 trying to get it to go faster... finally topping 40 mph in standard form.... (something like 3 stone ago!)

I'm now 40 something and ride an FZR600 however on a mad bid of nostalgia, bid on and won a ratty MT50 field bike on EBAY !!! £ 95 all in!

Move forward 2 years and having spend £'s on EBAY and various websites, we're putting bike 1 back together. I say bike 1 because as you do, I amassed enough bits to make 2 bikes.... So I've a sort of standard MT50 (with a 60 cc big bore) and an out and out racer with a H100 motor.

To keep it legal, I guess I need to register them both as motorcycles and pay motorcycle rate tax, which I guess I do when I apply for V5's from the DVLA??

How do I stand should I be pulled by plod? I've a full licence so no riding issues.............. as long as its taxed accordingly am I in the clear?

I've put lots of nice trick bits on the '50' so it should do 50-55mph and I'm told that the H100 engined MT50 should be good for 65-70mph?

Anyone out there got any advice... (Please not the 'sell it and get a proper bike type please).... I've got into moped tuning... what next? a nice FS1E with a YB100 motor?

Cheers

Yep register them as motorcycles, ride them dressed as teenage chavvy as you can, then you'll be the one having fun when plod stops you Twisted Evil

Like the time on Police Interceptors when they smugly stopped a 125 with no L plates, asked the 'lad' when he'd got his full licence "1956 mate" Laughing

Please show some pics of these really interesting small and inappropriately fun machines!

I remember reading the CMM Honda MB5 tuning series, and it did state how they went about re-registering the bike as a motorcycle instead of a moped. There was not that much that needed to be done I think, but good luck getting any sense out of the DVLA.

As for fun with small bikes, Im not far off your age and I've developed a bit of an interest in 125cc bikes myself in the last few years. The weird thing with my KMX is that first time around I never owned a 125cc version, my first KMX was a 200, but it's all good!

I recently saw a nice YB100 with a chrome allspeed type pipe in nice condition, and it sounded awesome like most air cooled 2stroke's do.

I can see the appeal of things like the FS1E with tuned or big engine swaps like the YB unit, and upgraded chassis and suspension parts etc. It's much the same thing on a smaller scale as those that tune RD350LC's with RGV250 suspension and brakes etc.

No old water boilers in this thread please! Laughing

Air cooled smokers will always sound the best end of!
A GT550 will out do a GT750 for sound everytime, if not for performance, reliability and tuning potential.

My KMX125 would sound a lot better with a 1980 KX125 motor in too!

Started to build the 1st of my two specials at the weekend... Had a few problems... The new headrace bearings must be bigger than the standard ball race as I'm left with about 6 mm of thread left to attach the big domed nut... Might need to put plenty of threadlock on and nip it up! Confused

Found that one of the bolts that holds on the nearside foot rest had been snapped... The frame has already been powdercoated so out came the old duvet, the drill various bits and my tap & die set and eventually I could get a 8mm bolt in to hold the bracket from the bottom. This bracket takes the side stand, which has been lengthened as the bike has been jacked up front and rear. I tried to use the standard side stand spring but I can't get it to fit... I need to stretch it from 4 inch to 5 inch to get it on and it aint having it so I need to look for a 4 1/2 spring somewhere...

Hope to get the engine in next. Have had the fly wheel cover & clutch cover polished so they will probably go on last. Just a few bits to find and then it'll be ready to set up & get running..

All going together... Gutted to find a dint in the read mudguard. It was there when it went for powder coat. Wish I'd seen it as I'd have probably bash it out Sad

Wow! That's a really nice clean shiny rolling chassis you have there! Loving the work so far! Thumbs Up

The black wheel rims look a very cool touch too. Are those all new or re-painted plastics you are using? They look mint.

I think this special is going to be a very cool bike indeed! Is this one getting the H100 engine BTW?

Fladdem, hurry up and show us your MonsT5er build, you have competition now! Laughing
