https://store.google.com/product/nexus_5x

I have to say it looks quite tempting to me. However it still gets to me that there is still no expandable storage.

I'm contemplating a new phone for myself for Christmas. I've been a fan of the Nexus range because of the lack of additional stuff that gets bunged on them, and the fact that you don't have to wait hope that you'll be receiving updates still in 6 months.

I currently have the Nexus 5 but the microphone is starting to go. It's the connector. Lasted quite well considering how frequently I drop it. I have a temporary fix but it's not 100% successful. Upgrading seems tempting, keeping the Nexus 5 around for flashing my AOSP builds instead of having to worry about my personal data each time I flash.

Every time I see the Nexus series of phones I wonder if the nexus 6 thinks it's a real iphone but is programmed to shut-down after 4 years.

I never liked the 6. I was eager to hear about it after knowing it existed, then felt sorely disappointed at the fact it was so big. I'm comfortable with a device around the size of a Nexus 5 in my hand. Maybe only a fraction bigger if needed. The physical size of the 6 just seemed too excessive and awkward for my desires. The 5 also fits nicely in my bike jacket.

So apparently because of including USB type-c, they've dropped support for wireless charging. Reasoning being that it charges pretty quickly and it would make the phone a little thicker.

I almost exclusively charge my phone via the 2.1A wall socket in my bedroom (had some fun fitting these at £9.99 a pop https://www.wickes.co.uk/Wickes-White-13-Amp-2-Gang-Switched-Socket-with-2-X-USB-Ports/p/132027), so not really something that affects me, though I know a few others that have wireless chargers on their work desks so that they can be topped up throughout the day without the hassle of wires. Seems like a big thing to drop for a tiny drop in phone depth.

Additionally that USB type-c? Only supports USB 2.0 specification.

I'm annoyed they dropped Qi as I was about to order the 5x assuming it had it. I have a car dock with wireless charging which is certainly the best application for it, other than making IOS users look on with bewilderment.

I was looking at sony phones, namely the xperia m5, as a much cheaper version of the z5 but with similar spec, then they decided not to release it in the UK Doh! and no Qi.

On the upside, the market is now flooded with cheap nexus 5s Wink

I've had a Nexus 4, 5 and 6 but I'm done with the Nexus line. They're always a little bit behind the curve on something whether it's battery life or a weak camera. I could deal with that with the 4 and 5 as they were cheaper to buy but when the 6 went full price it just wasn't worth it. Samsung, LG or Sony phones are much more polished.

I see you point clearly. Battery life has been my biggest gripe on my 5. I even bought a battery case for it for those busy days out as otherwise it would be flat as a pancake.

My main gripe with the other manufacturers is potential locked bootloaders, and the bloated OEM ROMs.

I had one of the Sony Xperias before. I hatred the software that came with it. I got the phone on contract and the bootloader was locked. Made it a pain in the ass.

Do many android phones not from the nexus line come with ROMs that haven't been butchered by the manufacturer?

Motorola is the only one selling them with near vanilla android.

You can root and flash a custom rom on the Galaxy S6 and LG G4, not sure about the Xperia line, I've never used one. Have a look at the xda forum for info on this.

Thanks! I find it personally refreshing to see how close that is to vanilla.

The Nexus 5x has a 2,700mAH battery. The Moto X Play? 3,630mAH. Almost 1,000mAH more!

Thank you for bringing another potential manufacturer that I can personally consider to light. I'm quite out-dated on what other manufacturers are currently offering. Thumbs Up

You can buy a Moto X Play unlocked with no contract on Amazon for £270, it's a bargain, then move to a SIM only contract and save a few quid.

I was tempted but still happy with my Nexus 5, especially since I replaced the battery. When the nexus 5 came out there was barely any sim free phones in the same price range but these days there are loads, the 5x is not a bargain like the 5 was at the time.

My N5's microphone is dodgy too but only when recording videos, it's a software issue apparently but one Google have no interest in fixing. It's as if the mic only focuses on voices and cuts out everything else.

fuxake. I never even thought they'd remove a basic function like wireless charging. Only read this AFTER my 'dispatched' notification has come through.

Anyone WTB a 5X? Slight teeth marks, potentially curved in two planes.

Mine is a hardware issue. I have to press below the camera lense (which is where to mic connects to the mobo) in order for it to hear me. Loudspeaker works OK.

Wireless charging isn't a deal breaker for me but I feel like only offering 16gb or 32gb, dropping wireless charging, not adding expandable storage, and a battery <3000mAH just leave this brand new device a little behind the times.

I'm in the same boat, I was keen to get the new 5 but it's not worth the upgrade unless your n5 is broken, and even then i'd still consider buying one of the few new ones left.

Android M hasn't improved my battery consumption at all with the new Doze feature, at least on my N5.

Quite like the look of the Xperia Z5, key word being the look. And expandable storage I guess - you'll need it for those photos taken on the 21 megapixel camera Shocked

Had a Nexus 5 for quite a while now. Well over a year. Great phone for the money and I will most likely be replacing it with a 5x although no wireless charging is the biggest bummer.

I hear the 615 sometimes struggles with a 1080p display.

I'm the same as other here, not worth the Upgrade from the N5 to N5x.

The Z5 looks great, but that price tag...

So the OnePlus One seems pretty good, looking at the specs. Weighing in at £219 for 64gb. Community seems pretty active for it, with Marshmallow already being unofficially available from XDA.

Still no expandable storage but 64gb with no microSD is a lot better than 16gb with no microSD.

OP1 displays have some nasty grounding issues that can cause it to randomly stop registering touch input.

Similarly the OP2 has some issue with the home button/sensor where it doesn't register touches correctly.

I hear the customer support leaves a lot to be desired so it's somewhat of a gamble.

Have had the 5X for a couple days in daily use now, it's battery life is significantly better than the 5 I have replaced. Maybe that's because it's a ~2yo battery huh.

Anyhoo, it's bigger (bad) but the screen is prettier (good). The charger plugs in upside down or rightways (good) and the headphone socket is in the right place (excellent).

So, good.

You can get invites easily enough, I got given 3 sharable ones yesterday, I put them on ebay and sold them for £4.50 each in 4 hours.

I've had not really issues with mine, a few minor software bugs.

If you get on the forum people are giving the invites away fairly often.

LG G5 is the only new phone that has a decent spec and a removable battery. Failing that its Galaxy S5. It's amazing how much phone reviewers are in the pockets of manufacturers as most seem to brush off the concerns about no removable battery. "who carries a space battery in their pocket?" Uhh me? Portable chargers are much more bulky, and you need to carry a cable to use one, and you need to let it charge up! Swapping a battery gets you to 100% instantly Laughing

Gave up waiting for an invite for the OnePlus - they can go and get fucked. Going for a 6P instead as I loved my previous N6.

Bit the bullet, ordered the OnePlus Two. Now waiting for it to arrive!

Now to sell some of the junk I've got gathering around the house to claw back some of the money I couldn't really afford to spend Laughing
