Where should i start with testing? and if that test fails what should i do next?

I have a digital multimeter which i can use too

Ahaha, thanks!

Also the black wire is not connected anywhere, it never has been and has been working fine without it!

That black wire with an eyelet is more than likely a ground
Leave it dangling, they just fit these for laughs

^^ This.
That is the ground wire and is usually fitted where you bolt the unit to the frame.

I've never tried to test one but it's the standard coil unit for AM6 and you can pick up a brand new one for <£15 delivered.

Try hooking up the ground wire before spending your hard earned though Thumbs Up

What I did when I had no spark on my DTR 125 is what I was told to do by helpful guys on here is to check the resistance with ur multi so YouTube how to check coil resistance and check results to ur specs in ur service manual, on my DTR I replaced the coil still no spark so on the wait for a stator and fingers crossed it's not the cdi hope I kinda helped a bit.
