Who else bought the same bike they did their DAS on?

So, as expected, choosing a bike is a quagmire of decisions and counter-decisions.

I'm almost tempted just to go with an XJ6 which is what I learnt on. Handled nicely on the Mod 1 and it was a nice ride on the Mod 2. Obviously any bike I buy is going to do the job after the 125 but I was wondering who else went down the same path?

Almost. GS 500, was advised against.

A2 License so stupid it's less stressful to stay on the tiddler until A license is possible and then upgrade to anything, unless something appealing comes up inbetween.

So advice, anything in budget, escape the tiddlers at the earliest opportunity.

A DAS bike is going to be in the intersection of a bunch of different requirements such that it's unlikely to be the bike of choice for lots of people.

I did my DAS on a CB500, which was fine, but I wasn't interested in buying a naked bike - most school bikes are nakeds, because plastic is expensive and it's easier to fit crash bars.

First bike I bought for my full license was an SH300, actually delivered before I passed my DAS. My ER6f followed shortly after - it was either going to be that or an SV650, and the ER6f was a lot more comfy to sit on.

I wanted the scooter because on balance I'd found scooters better for London and the specs of the SH300 were the best balance of low weight and higher power. I wanted a faired bike for touring, that was reasonably comfy to ride, not too heavy, without high insurance costs and something that wouldn't be the fastest thing I'd ever ride - I wanted to feel the thrill of an even better bike later on.

So my requirements and the DAS bike requirements only really had "lowish power" in common.

What's best for you depends on what you want out of a bike. Most bikes don't do everything well; they have pros and cons. It's a good reason to have more than one bike.

My missus on the other hand did hers on an MT-07. That would have been pretty sweet as a newbie.

The school I did my test with were selling the very bike I learned on and took my test on. Wish I'd bought it now (cb500). Ended up buying the triumph in my sig.

As mention above not a chance, theres absolutely no way I'd own one unless it was given to me for free.

They're heavy and under powered.

Yup - did the test on an ER5 - then looked around for the first cheapy 'big' bike I could find...which turned out to be an ER5.

Not quite DAS, but my sister on the old 33bhp system just kept her 125 for the two years of 33bhp then bought a ZZR600.

I on the other hand bought a string of shit 250s and 400s spending loads of money on heaps of 80s junk.

I think my sister did it better.

i did my DAS on an XJ6 then bought an MT07 which is about the same neck of the woods. got boring within weeks so went for an MT09. That got boring in a couple of months so went for a litre bike.

just get on a big bike from the outset and ride it like a n00b for a bit

I did my test on a CBF500. The only feature I liked was the footrests moulded into the side of the frame.

Had the opportunity to ride the same bike last week. Not buying one was a good choice.

55bhp apparently, was probably less for the full license test bike.

Couldn't fault it, but was already bored of it by the end of training.

I doubt anyone has their dream bike languishing in the "middle weight, restricted, general purpose" section of MCN ....

I did my A2 on a BMW f650. If it was a F800 then Hell yes. Actually I totally still would have the F650 if they were a bit cheaper.

You cant really go wrong with the XJ6 tbh, unless you grow out of it.

We use a Honda Hornet for Mod 1. It has ABS so makes the Em stop a doddle. As a result of students playing on that we have had a number of students own one as a first bike.

Nice idea for a thread, but it does make me laugh, those people that passed DAS on a bike like a GS/ER5 and then run them down to buggery and slate them saying they would not be seen dead on one?

If you can only be seen on sportsbike and nothing else is ever good enough, or wakes you from a coma, then you should have bloody well passed your test on one, instead of using a middle weight that was the fastest thing you've probably ever ridden to get a piece of paper with, and then saying it's the worst POS in the world.

Did the full licence on an SFV650 (or Gladius if you must) this year, and bought a used one after I passed. I had sat on a few other bikes in the shop, but wasn't keen. On the faired ones, the mirrors seemed to be miles away and only showed my elbows. Tried an ER6F and it felt really cramped around the legs and feet. Although the SFV is supposed to be suited to shorter riders, I've always found the fit pretty good (5'10", 32" inseam).

More than enough power to keep me entertained, and I like the torque and smooth delivery. A screen and heated grips have made it much better for longer runs, but need to sort out a better seat (it really does feel like a plank after an hour or two). The plan is to ride this for a year, and then assess whether I want to keep it or go in a different direction (or maybe get a second bike).

doing my DAS on a lowered er-6n, got an er-6f in the bike shop being lowered and waiting for me to pass my tests. It was that or the gladius because of my height, I preferred the er-6f so why not?! Maybe I will keep it for years, maybe I will get bored and change it, maybe I will total it, who knows?
