I've got the wife's old laptop and wiped it and re-installed windows XP (thats what I've got and that's what my games run on)

Installed no problems, plugged it into the router to register but no sound and some games won't run as there's no hardwear / graphics acceleration

Usually in the past windows has simply found the drivers it needs and gotten on with the job (different machine and about 9 years ago)

this time it doesn't want to know.

Any suggestions how to resolve?

You'll need to go into device manager and google the part numbers of things not working.
The maker might still have an all in one style download to get things running. Their website should be your start point searching.

Don't be installing random software claiming to find them for you, this area of searching seems rife with naughty goings on to target the unwary.

I've got a list of 'other devices' which includes:

Multimedia Audio Controller
PCI Modem
Video Controller
Video Controller (VGA Compatible)

all of these have a yellow question mark against them and a ! with yellow background.

I can't see anything that looks like a list of hard wear in the way I expected to.

it's been about 9 years since I did anything like this having bought my first mac in 2006

The other option is, this computer just isn't up to spec to play settlers 2 and I have to make do with roller coaster tycoon 2 until I've saved up for a new old laptop...

Try the laptop manufacturers website, many will have driver downloads available in their support section.

If it's a dell, you're onto a winner because you just need to type the service number off the sticker into their website and it'll take you to the support centre which has all the driver downloads for that specific machines hardware on one page.

xp has struggled to find drivers since it entered it's extended/ security update only phase.

That said as others have stated you will need to check the manufacturers website for hardware drivers, if you want to get the updates to bring the pc as close to secure as possible try the guys over at ryan vm for add on/ update packs.

There is a registry mod that fools the m/s update servers into believing you are running a point of sale /embedded version of xp but there has been at least one major update issue I have read about causing crashes etc.

XP is basically obsolete, so why not give Linux a try and play games using WINE. Issues with XP are only going to get more frequent.

The only reason I switched from xp x64 to 7 64 was because the effort going into the graphics card drivers was not great.

The system was fantastically stable but the gpu was just not being used to it's full potential according the benchmark tests I did at the time.

I don't know if it was a dx9 vs dx10/11 issue but I would get less fps on xp than 7 even with large address aware flags set on all my programs and games.
