PostPosted: 14:51 - 19 Oct 2015    Post subject: Number plate light for MOT Reply with quote

Just booked the gsxr in for its mot for next Monday.

Naturally, I fitted a tail tidy when I bought it. The tail tidy got rid of the number plate light. I asked the chap who booked it for me who said he "thinks" it needs a light but having just checked a link I found from the forum search all I read was that it needs a reflector.

It's got a small plate at the moment so I'll stick the standard back on and grab a reflector from the garage when I take it for the mot. Just wondered about the light.

Also, My exhaust does have a stamp saying "not for road use" hidden away in a recess. That recess happens to be dirtied up with soot. You can see (when you look for it) that it says "not" but the rest is unreadable. Can they clean the rest off to make it readable? (Bought the can 2nd hand and i started to clean that recess before putting in on, I quickly stopped cleaning it when I realised what it was hiding Laughing )

It had a couple of advisories last year from the looks of it so I'll see how it does. If it fails I'll just move the winter service I'm planning forward a bit and sort anything out myself.

I can't see anything concrete but most searching suggests it is not required for MOT.

https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/449526/mot-inspection-checklist-motorcycle-vt29m.pdf

You could call your MOTers or should I call mine for you? Smile

It is a requirement for cars etc.

quite a coincidence as i have just booked my MOT for friday.

popped in to my local bike garage for a quick chat about my exhaust. Top chap so i'm happy to not have to put the original back on. So lucky to have a proper sound bike shop.

Pretty sure it cant have 'not for road use' stamped on it by the way, i have in the past just filed this away Smile

also noticed my number plate light wasnt wired up, so i'm doing this now as it is the law to have one methinks.

Any MOTer I have used hasn't been toooo bovered about exhausts as most say the requirement is a nonsense as you test with a road legal then fit your NFRU unit anyway. But sense is not a thing the Law will encourage. Smile

Any way, how the feck can a back-to-front ball-capped beplooked yoot get his/her Vauxhall Corsa through an mot? Shocked

Unsure if its a requirement, however I doubt they'll give a shit.

Exhaust wise, gaffer tape the "not for" bit.

Reflector needed for MOT.
Licence plate light is needed by law, if the vehicle has been registered on or after the first of April 1986... but not needed for the MOT.

Number plate lights are not a part of the test - they were going to be included a few years ago (one of the official VOSA training videos even shows one being tested) but the amendment never happened.

Everyone knows there is a prescribed size for number plates, dictated by specific measurements for font, spacing and borders, but in reality, we aren't encouraged to get out a tape measure, so variations on the theme routinely pass.

There is a 'get out of jail free' card in the tester's manual, that says plates should be clearly legible from 15 meters away, so my general rule is, if it's not properly taking the piss (single line, illegible font, mounted so as to obviously try to make it hard to read) it passes; the majority of testers take the same line.

Exhausts are pretty straightforward; if they're gas tight and securely mounted, it's OK.

The manual does say they should sound similar to the standard system, but I don't know what every bike left the showroom floor with and I'm also slightly deaf, so who am I to judge Wink

Having said that, a system marked 'Not For Road Use' is given as a specific RfR and whilst I wouldn't be cleaning off dirt to find such a mark, some might, so I would give that a few strokes with a file.

Good to know.

What's the deal with pillion foot pegs? I have a solo seat cowl fitted and pegs removed. The mounting holes are not blanked and visible. Do the pegs need to e put back on?

Nope, seat means you need pegs, pegs mean you need seat. No pegs and no seat, winner.

Make sure the reflector is centered, I got an advisory because neither of the two reflectors on my bike were centrally mounted, there was one either side of the center! Rolling Eyes

Well, that's mental. The place where I go regularly sticks a single one in the bottom left or right corner of the registration plate.

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/mot-inspection-manual-for-class-1-and-2-vehicles

No mention at all of a number plate light.

"Mopeds and motor bicycles require one unobscured red reflector which is aligned to the vehicles longitudinal centre line and is positioned to reflect squarely to the rear"

Doesn't have to be on the reg plate, just in the middle of the bike. Or at least not "obviously incorrectly positioned".

This "not needing a No. light for MOT"...is that bike specific as I've had a couple of cars fail on it in the past?

Yes. Car and bike MOTs are entirely different.

just to update and offer some advice to others.

anyone with integrated lights at the rear, these are an MOT fail. There needs to be a specific gap between the running/brake light and the indicator lights.

Another bonkers rule. Going to have to buy some indicators and rewire the rear now, lucky i have an awesome MOT guy Smile

I thought that was common knowledge.

Not quite.

MOT inspection manual wrote:
The precise position and angle of visibility of direction indicators are not part of this inspection, but they must be on each side of the longitudinal axis of a solo machine

Gap?

He's thinking of the lighting regs.

However, that's a separate issue and nothing to do with the MOT test. There are plenty of things in there that aren't in the MOT - rear number plate lights for one. Wink

The integrated lights fail because normally the Tail light goes off when the indicator is on, i.e they alternate, so it "adversely affects the operation of another light"

Update:

MOT passed.

Put the standard size plate back on and got a reflector when there (wasn't charged for the reflector).

No mention/advisory for my micron gp exhaust.

No mention/advisory for the dirty great tight spot in my chain.

Got advisories for front and rear pads (which I know about, it's on the winters service shopping list) and surface corrosion on rear disc.

Went home, changed plate and went for a celebratory ride. Thumbs Up

Measure the distance between the indicators. If it's 240mm+ (and the indicators don't effect the tail light, that's a valid MOT point), then VT17 for great justice.
