That cbr 600 has gone mate, I just brought it! Only joking, that'd be my choice, esp for first big bike. Looks very good, too good maybe, but if it checks out, I'd be all over it Thumbs Up

Quite a range of different bikes there, it's difficult to judge without a good idea of what you want from your bike. Do you want it sporty, sports/touring, what sort of riding position do you want? Ideal budget?

Out of the list there, I'd personally pick the first Thundercat. A nicely presented bike with a full service history, at a reasonable price. A good all-rounder. The mileage is higher than the others but if the history is that good, you should be fine with it. They're pretty reliable.

Equally you can't go wrong with a CBR600F, that's also a decent looking bike, but obviously a fair bit more expensive.

Lots of alarm bells ringing on the Daytona 650, why have they spent so much of the advert describing how it's a trade sale and they don't want to offer a warranty on it? There's something big they're not telling you, but in any case they cannot retail a bike to a customer claiming it's a trade sale... you still have very strong consumer rights even if they try and claim you don't.

Would curveball with the triumph but heart says for 2k, get a K3 GSXR600

Ignore the Thundercats if you like second gear.

Personally I'd get the Honda. (I'd avoid the GSXR750 as it's for sale by SuperbikeFactory, think they're the selling arm of webuyanybike.com? )

Why the 600, and not a GSXR750 as mentioned by OP?

The Triumph and the GSXR would be my choices if I could ride a sports bike (but I'd try to stretch for a later model GSXR - I take it there's a budget restriction here?), but as mentioned, depends what you want from it. Definitely not another SV! - can't see the point if you've already had one.

Because finding a nice early k model 750 for 2k would be a chore unless it's fucked.

Unlikely problem, guaranteed saving over an equivalent CBR.

However, I'd say all those bikes are over priced and your money would go further privately. Dealers don't have a monopoly on good bikes. At that age, I'd suggest that they're more likely to have nails that folk are trading in to get shot of them.

As to dealer warranty, understand that it doesn't buy you no-quibble peace-of-mind. It buys you the opportunity to quibble. Unless you actually enjoy that, buy privately and spend the savings on servicing/sorting the bike.

That Woods, who are selling the Triumph, have nearly all their bikes on 'Trade Sale' whatever that is. Which probably equates to 'Fuck Off' if anything goes wrong. I wouldn't deal with them with that attitude.

It generally helps if you state what you want your bike to do.

In the absence of any useful information along those lines I would suggest the CBR as it does everything. Boringly, but it'll do it all.

From the given list I'd want that GSXR 750, though I'm not sure it would be a "good" first bike. A CBR600F is a probably a safe bet.

Don't buy old bikes from dealers, you are paying extra for fuck all.

That GSXR appears to be an import, not that it necessarily makes any difference, but it's something else to think about.

Confucius says, the first big motorcycle is about the looks, it is what gives you an idea of what you will seek in the future, when obtaining your second big motorcycle. Thumbs Up

I'd go for the CBR600F since it's kind of the best of the both worlds, sport/touring wise. But as I was saying, you might won't like it and buy an SV then. Bear in mind, you are buying a motorcycle not getting married, you may easily sell it whenever you want and buy something else, no questions asked. I liked in-line 4 cylinders from the moment I got my first motorcycle and I was buying in-line fours ever since. Not meaning I wouldn't get something else at some point. Smile

I have to ask than why autotrader? Overpriced high mileage high wear multi owner bikes from dealers??

Man up look at ebay and find a bike near you. Go and see it. Asking which bike to buy based on Internet pictures? Really??

When you buy second hand does not matter what model is the bike mate. You get the bike which is in the best condition with lowest miles with 1 or 2 owners max. You do not need some 8 owners autotrader crap.

For example this CBR is 5000 miles, 2 owners only, and £500 so far, find similar bikes go and see them, than choose based on the bike condition...

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Honda-CBR-600-F-2000-W-Reg-Only-4975-Miles-from-New-/281836681982?hash=item419ec67afe:g:hmYAAOSwwbdWKjhu

£2000 is enormous budget if you do your selection right. You can find immaculate 1 owner bike for that money. But you need to put some effort and go there Very Happy

Illustrates my point. They can't (in principle) disclaim away your statutory rights to buy something that's roadworthy[*], as-described, and fit for the purpose sold, including as to durability.

In practice, they are saying that their customer service representative is chained up in a kennel round the back, go and stick your head in.

Don't give geezers your money, and especially don't pay them a premium.

On the choice of bike, you obviously want racebike, but do keep and open mind and try at least one upright as well.

[*] Unless explicitly described as not so, in which case they shouldn't let you ride it away.

So is ebay the best place to look? Auto trader has a lot of bikes. Also how does ebay work with bikes. Do I bid until I win and see the bike after or do I see the bike before I bid?

I will probably need to get a bike on finance because I don't have the money to spend straight up yet. How much can I save usually by going with a private seller? Also you get a bit of security when going with dealerships.

On your list I've ridden the Thundercat and the CBR.

I preferred the Thundercat to the CBR. Whilst the examples you posted are pricey, they can be had cheaper used. The Thundercat is cheaper to the CBR. I found it to be a reliable bike, only ever giving me issue after an accident that I had with it.

Whilst I enjoyed how the CBR looked, I found it personally too cramped (think it was a '99 model). I found the Thundercat ('98 model) more comfortable to ride (I'm 6ft2). The seating position was more upright too.

The Thundercat is quite an easy bike to work on. Removing the fuel tank is an easy task. Removing the carbs is a bit of a pain due to access of the screws, but inside there is a fair amount of space, making it friendlier to work with. I stripped mine to give it a decent service when I first took it home.

For purchasing I would look towards Gumtree, eBay and Autotrader (private). With eBay, go and meet people and view the bike in person. If I was selling on eBay and you turned up at my door, happy with the bike, and offered me my asking price in cash, you'd take the bike with you and I'd cancel the eBay advert.

Pre-2000 bikes? Gumtree.

MC900 wrote:

Is this a serious question? If it's an auction, you're bidding to buy, not to haggle. You turn up and if it's as described, you pay the money, no humming and hawing. This is exactly why so many adverts say "NO MORE TIME WASTERS".

If you want to haggle and try-before-you-buy, go and look at a bike with an asking price and offer what you think it's worth.

MC900 wrote:

In principle. In practice, see above. We've tried to tell you.

The only guarantee with a dealer is that you'll pay more. 50%-100% more at the sort of bikes you're looking at. I had a play on a 1999 CBR600 this summer that was cosmetically tired but that needed nothing doing mechanically. £900 fixed price.

That CBR600F would be my pick. Nothing to go wrong with it except for a reg/rec.

£2,195 is a bit much though for a bike with such mileage imho.
