I've completed my CBT on a 50cc moped. I started it on a geared bike but I was holding up the other 2 learners, 1 of which was using a ped and the other had a geared bike but was already familiar with geared bikes so the instructor suggested I complete it on a ped. I was a little disappointed about that but whatever, fair enough.

I'm not sure now whether to book a lesson on a geared bike or just learn on my own. I dont want to pick up and ride home a geared bike but I could get a friend to ride it home for me and I could pick a quite time to ride it around the block until I got to grips with it. I get nervous and awkward on lessons but then again I would if I was stalling infront of other motorists so Im not sure what to do.

Has anyone had a similar experience or got any advice? It would be much appreciated.

The downside of a CBT is completing on an automatic does entitle you to go out and figure out gears without any instruction. This can be daunting. Your school should have taken the time to get you through gears. The CBT should be structured to work at the speed of the slowest student and as you had never done gears before and the other 125 rider had, you should have been instructed and not just dumped onto a ped.

My advice. Find a different school explain the problem and ask if they can do an hour or 2 lesson. We call it a geared conversion. Takes about an hour or so and in that time we teach full gear changing and even include a short road ride.

Sounds like a good plan, it's zero cost so go for it and see how you get on. Teaching your brain the co-ordination for clutch and gears doesn't take that long.

Yeah im considering a different instructor, he was ok but he doesn't seem to have much patience for the slower/more inexperienced learners. He said Id pick up gears in an hour or so no problem, I think Id rather learn myself than have him teach me. Maybe a lesson with another instructor is the best option though.

How long did it take you?

Same as me I plan to Learn to Ride Geared down the street then take to the road if ready.

My son did his CBT on a 'ped' with no gears.

Went to collect his Aprilia RS50 and he was quite nervous as not ridden a 'geared' bike before.

We spent 30 mins in a the car park getting him used to the 'feel' of the clutch throttle balance when pulling off and stopping, all at slow speeds.

I then took him for a 1 hour ride out on a Friday evening as a baptism of fire as that was a time when traffic was quite heavy.

We rode for 10 mins and then stopped so I could gage how he was feeling and if he had a any questions.

He was still nervous, so i told him I have all the time in the world and would be right behind him ensuring that any vehicles that overtook would give him a wide berth.

We set of again after a short pep talk.

Two minutes later he stops again saying he can't do it.

Another five minute pep talk and we were on our way again.

This time he continued and despite one or two errors he kept going.

Got to some heavier traffic and I passed him so he could follow me when I was filtering.

Que 40 mins later he was riding smoothly and more confidently.

Another pep talk on him fine tuning his obs skills and he was let of to fend for himself in the wild.

He never looked back (excuse the pun), and a year down the rode is still alive and well.

So the shortened version is just get on with it and do your obs and then do some more obs.

Alex

sounds like a poor riding school to me. It shouldnt be about just getting as many people to pass, it should be about ensuring riders are safe and capable.

Admittedly it wont take you long to get used to gears and you now have the confidence and experience of riding so that will help. I'd go with getting a bike and practicing yourself, either in a car park or quiet roads.

Be even better if you can go out with someone else and follow them, that way you can concentrate more on riding than where you are meant to be going etc.

It would be best to find an empty car park to practise on.
That way your not worrying about anyone one else on the road.

Just repeat the exercises you did during the CBT (off-road). Although its probably best to spend 10 minutes or so just starting off and stopping in 1st to get the hand of clutch and brakes.

I had exactly the same happen to me. I was too slow for the other guys who were all just renewing their CBTs. I was furious that I paid for a days tuition and was sent off after 4 hours (including about 2 hours of tea breaks!). I ended up picking my bike up in a van and then just got a friend to ride next to me whilst I rode it 5 mins down the road to a supermarket car park when I got home. I spent 6 hours riding around getting used to it repeating all the manoeuvres I had done in the CBT.

One thing I found really helped me was watching videos and learning the theory behind how switching gears worked. It sounds stupidly simple but if you know what's meant to happen its easier to make it happen. Best advice I could give you is just don't panic. I stalled at a light and spent 5 minutes trying to get the bike to move and the more I panicked the harder it became to get it going. When I did get it going the light had changed to red and I went straight through and narrowly avoided getting T-Boned by a Beamer.

Give it a few days and you'll be wondering what you were worried about! It's all practice!

Thanks its good to hear stories like this, when everyone just tells you how easy it all is it just makes me feel worse when I get nervous or make mistakes. Im still a bit nervous about getting my first bike and having to figure out the gears on the road but Im also thinking that Im less nervous when im not being assessed and I should just be a bit more brave and go for it.
