If you buy new, and I have for many years, remember.....
1. You will have to have fully comp insurance.
2. Get GAP insurance.
3. Plan on keeping your bike a good while.
4. 0% is a good deal however you look at it.
5. PCP might not be as good as a straight 0% repayment, do your figures.
6. Buy something you will continue to enjoy. An SV does not come into that category, a Street Triple does.
7. Enjoy whatever you decide to buy. ____________________ Triumph Trophy Launch Edition |

Counterpoint, I wouldn't keep a new bike sitting in the garage depreciating away. It'll be losing money hand over fisty whether you're riding it or not.
And OP's new bike is going to cost a grand as soon as the key is turned, so do be sure that you're getting one that you can live with for years. Thing is, you're only going to know that with a basis for comparison, so I'd really strongly dissuade you from buying new and getting the "Ooh, new rider, no test rides" fob off.
There are plenty of used 600/650 bikes out there for £1000 - £1500 that aren't going to cost much to own. So, you get the wrong one, no big deal, sell it and try another. Almost anything is cheaper than taking the depreciation hit on a new bike then finding that you can't get on with it. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Why!?!?
If I crazy/wealthy enough to waste money on new I would be using it all the time. Having a second old bike defeats the point (and therefore dealer will have to give you a hire bike when they cock up the servicing and keep it for a month). Buying new, you take a massive it on depreciation, but actually using the bike wont increase it much, unless you bend it.. which you can afford to do..
Id rather have 5 or so used bikes.. or just two and plenty of other shit. And no worry of comprehensive insurance. |

Because I wouldn't want to subject my shiny new fireblade to 30/40K a year of commuting in all weathers on roads full of horse shit. If however I could afford to do that and not bat an eye lid in a few years when it doesn't look shiny and new anymore I would.
Also only a mug pays for a hack 'serviced'.

I've done both new and used, and indeed back in the day (16years ago) I wanted to go out after DAS and buy a brand new bike with cash as my first option.
The big thing that stopped me was insurance costs. Not many people would buy new without FC insurance, and for me it was £1800-2000 for a policy on a £4-5k new bike, so look into prices first.
Secondly a used bike can be a lot more fun, especially if you want to mod it, work on it, and also improve your riding without being precious over a new bike. This might me partly the point that G is getting at.
I wouldn't want to or feel confident doing much work or seriously modifying a new bike, and with something under warrenty your very limited in this respect.
But finally, I think there's a useful place for 0% APR deals on new bikes, and if it's a daily rider to get you to work in all weather's you'd be mad not to take advantage of a cheap new bike deal, with ABS and the other nice to haves etc.
But in buying a new bike, and with the aim of keeping it a few years to get good value from it, you should get a bike that isn't just a tool for the job, but something that is a bit exciting too if possible. |

I wouldn't buy new having just passed my test as you will do something silly that damages it - this may be a simple forget the side stand, get caught off balance or just fall off.
Get some experience for 6 months or so then consider new. ____________________ Current : '08 Yamaha FZ1s

That is a major point. If you like to work on a bike and see the result of your work that is not gonna happen with new bike. You cannot do any mods, because you will invalidate the warranty.
And servicing your new bike yourself is risky. First many extened warranties are actually service contracts, means you need to use the dealer. Second your standard warranty can still be voided if you or your mechanic use inferior consumables (such as oils) or parts, or if the servicing isn’t as regular as prescribed in the manual, or if you don’t follow proper servicing procedures.
For example if you buy Honda you need to follow the exact repair procedures written in the Honda service manual. Good luck with proving that later.
All this basicly means new bike is very expensive to own.
There are people which are fine to own a bike the same way you own a car. Which is fine. Except it is not fun. And you loose a lot of money in the process. Again if you are filthy rich that is fine.
But by all means do buy a new bike. My vote is for Fireblade
That is the only way the rest of us can have a good second hand one at some point
As per my previous post, if they approve you for 0% finance, they will approve you for 0% purchase credit card too. Get one and buy any bike you want - new or second hand.
Sensible thing to do would be a low miles second hand in immaculate condition.
Using your own financing will make you the bike owner and you can sell or exchange it as you wish anytime.
Finally nobody has mention depreciation. The moment you get out fo the sale room with a new bike you will loose at least 15% of the money. Means you buy new for £10000 you loose £1500 at the moment they hand you the key and you exit the front door.
One more reason to buy second hand even if that is 1 year old second hand. Somebody else has lost that money for you - the 1st owner. ____________________ Adrian Monk: Unless I'm wrong, which, you know, I'm not...
