No, not medication.

My granddad has decided he wants a tablet to look at things on the internet and watch telly. Basically something to distract him from the misery of looking after my amnesiac grandmother. Price isnt a problem. BT have done us a decent deal on broadband so that's sorted.

He is 76 (I think) with virtually zero IT knowledge so I want something easy to use. On the one hand, I was thinking a Hudl as they're very family friendly and only £99. On the other, more expensive hand I was thinking an iPad of some sort as iOS is pretty intuitive and has loads of accessibility options - his eyes aren't bad but aren't getting any better and it would be helpful to tailor it. An iPad mini or anything smaller is probably too small.

Have any of you sourced something similar for your elderly relatives? If so, what worked?

Thanks

My mum's in her 70s and she fumbled around with a couple of Android tablets, struggling to use them to any degree. Now she has an iPad and she's never off the thing. As you rightly say, iOS is far more intuitive than any Windows or Android offering.

Conversely, my dad has had an Android tablet and gets on fine with it.

I think it depends on how savvy he's actually going to be.

Good idea. I've got access to an iPad and a Hudl so I'll see which he gets in best with.

I vote the go and play with things option.

I also don't recommend going cheap for the sake of not spending money. I imagine that he'll far prefer using something that has enough performance for things to be effortless.

If the UI is laggy or slow because of cheap hardware, it really takes away from the UX.

I personally things Android is very easy to use. However I strongly dislike that many brands heavily alter the Android firmware. If going Android, I would pick something running Android >=5.1 and as vanilla installation as possible.

Whilst I would never purchase my own iPad, I do see them as great devices for non tech friendly people providing that the budget isn't an issue.

I've just scored a free Fire HD 6. Eh. Very bulky and heavy for such a small screen, battery life is mediocre, but it's fairly snappy and easy to use with lots of big icons and "CLICK HERE TO SPEND MONIES" guidance.

I'd go big screen and would have to suggest trying iOS. Mrs Borg's Nexus is fairly decent though.

Are they still completely "Amazonified" (ie no Play Store only Amazon appstore etc)?

My parents are terrible when it comes to tech stuff (they get me to do the tv updates when new channels are available, that's pressing one button) and got an iPad for when they go on holiday in the states. Mum uses it all the time, they go to macca's or anywhere with free wifi and Facetime me. Definitely friendly for folks who have issues with technology.

But another vote for taking him out to have a play on different models with different software Thumbs Up

The hudl has been discontinued now with no next generation on the horizon so id discount that as an option. If price isn't an issue I think the iPad is your best bet, my grandad is 91 and can manage it.

I had to track down 3 tesco stores today to get a hudl2 as its being replaced by a windows connect type tablet. I've got an iPad 2 that's seen daily use for 3 years now and still goes like new even with the numerous updates ......

Arguably the best 'tablets' for old people are 'Euthanasia' ones.

My in-laws are 90 ish and find their tablets useful for researching health issues etc. I know a few younger oldies in their 80's who find androids great for chatting to friends and family. I'm just a youth (66!) and spend a lot of time researching bike info. Kids ( under 50) use them for social media. Babies ( under 30) spend a lot of time on blowing up people type games. New borns ( under 20) are just learning of course. When I was an IT teacher before androids existed it constantly came home to me how future generations would grow as technology did. It's an exciting world and whatever age you are, the humble tablet is so so important. Buy one for an old person...you bet. But keep up the tutorials - watching them learn and add to their quality of life is just as rewarding as teaching a six year old to send emails to a class mate. Long live technology, it has relevance to everyone, whatever their age.

It has nothing to do with the OS.

It has a lot to do with someone helping their Gran or Grandad.

if you get an android tablet check out Smart Launcher.

I installed it on the in laws phone, and made it so much easier than the stock samsung launcher.
