Options for ER5 tachometer

Hi guys,

As with many of these bikes, the tachometer on my ER5 didn't make it through a reg/rec failure. A combination of my initial poor soldering attempt and the resistor burning out a second time (yep, should've just done the diode as well - didn't think the resistor would go as quickly as it did) means the board on my current one is knackered.

I nearly managed a cheap tach in the post, but the message from the eBay seller is making it sound like the courier's managed to lose it!

Given that the going rate for the clocks seems to be ~£100 when they're available, am I completely nuts for wondering whether there might be a different tach that fits well enough and works in the clocks mount? Has anyone else had a go?

The most obvious one in my mind to have a go with is a GPZ500 tach. Hoping that maybe someone that's worked with both at some point knows enough to suggest whether it's a complete non-starter...the idea has limited life as dropping £100 on tachs to still not have something working at the end of the day would be pretty dim!


Failing the above, does anyone have any suggestions for incorporating a voltmeter into the clock setup or somewhere useful on the bike? If I was heading that route I'd probably just stump up for whatever working tach was around. I'm not too fussed about it looking good, but I'm paranoid about the reg/rec now to say the least...

You can get universal tachos that trigger from an inductive loop clamped around an HT lead. Should be the cheapest way of doing it.
