Sorn it, keep it insured.

Re MOT in the spring, Tax it, ride it.

Simple as that.

You can sorn it and keep it insured.

But you can not tax it without insurance. Once insurance expires/gets cancelled you must either re-insure or sorn it. I think that is were people get confused.

SORN was to stop people dodging road tax.

But it now means DVLArsehole gets moar funds as silly fuckers like me gets caught out (too often to be serioous) Mad . Embarassed

You cannot have/own/be the registered keeper of an un-taxed vehicle.
A 'registered' vehicle MUST be SORNed if not taxed.

It doesn't need to be insured to be SORNed but if you value the vehicle then insure for relevant reasons.

You will need insurance to get tax when tax is due or you want to use it on the road again.

A vehicle is considered permanently SORNed until it is TAXed again.

This.

You don't have to SORN just because the MOT runs out - you just can't ride it (except to/from an MOT place). I doubt you'd get much refund from the VED refund, so just leave it as it is and MOT at your leisure (remembering the point above that if/when you need to renew insurance you will need a valid MOT in place).

No you don't.

You take up the government's offer of a 'free' refund for tax un-used.

Register the beast SORN and then forget about it.

The problem is you will get a dry horses hoof ahp ya bum if you 'forget' to tax it (as you are not using it and so forget. Embarassed )

They will rape you for £80 pounds if not taxed or declared SORN.

So it is simpler to SORN and get the tax back.

There is no benefit to you if you do not get the tax refund. It only helps Jeremy Hunt.

It's worth double checking your insurance covers vehicles not on the road.

A friend insured his old landy with Footman James who somehow found out it was on SORN while he was doing some work on it (couple of months) around the time the MOT expired and cancelled his insurance without him knowing.

Went to MOT and tax it etc to find half a years policy had disappeared because "we don't cover vehicles that aren't roadworthy" or similar explanation.

So let me get this right then!

I can let the MOT expire, leave the bike in the garage and keep it insured (if the insurance company let me), its got valid road tax till June 2016.

Wait till March ish, drive it to MOT station (PASS Cert) and all's good.

So DVLA will only pull me if the Tax runs out and I don't renew it, yeah.

NO need to SORN then?

Correct, you need an MOT to buy VED, but the MOT expiring doesn't to the best of my current knowledge cancel the VED.

However, there's little benefit to keeping the VED running if it's off the road, since you don't need VED when riding to or from an MOT.

There's the caveat that (sort of as above) your insurer might indeed have some horrid clause about not covering the bike unless it's got an extant MOT.

Which does raise the question of how you get it to the MOT station, to which I'd shrug and say "M'dunno."

Only if you let them. It's one of the easiest penalties (not a fine) to avoid.

Pray tell how you re-tax when they set the dogs on one's arse?

I know from personal experience that they will not issue tax unless the vehicle has been properly taxed or SORNed in the past.

Never had any problems 're-taxing, and I've had about 4 on 3 different vehicles.

They set aproxima on my arse. Who I told to fuck off and stop nuisance calling me.
The debt is sold off to those mobsters.

I wasn't saying off the top of my head about not geting re-taxed. I went through it all with a DVLA Counter Witch about 10 years ago.
The cunt refused to re-tax until 'fine' for three months non-tax was paid.

The 'new' scam is a fixed penalty of £80.

The beast of that is that it is £80 whether a bike or an artic.

if no MOT then you need to be driving to a booked MOT test for it to be legal,

just popping down the road one saturday morning to the garage in the hope of them fitting you in won't cut it
