hi, this may have been mentioned before, but does anyone know of a decent cheap helmet cam for simply recording other road users incase of a incident,i am looking at not spending much on it as money is short but i feel that one would be beneficial to me .

SJcam SJ4000, cheap, comes with all the mounting options you could ever not need, 1080p in reasonable quality. Removable battery so if the battery goes to shite you can easily replace (and spares are cheap as chips).

Be sure to get a genuine SJcam one not a knock off.

Easier said than done, most of them seem to be knock-offs now.

From what I understand this is an actual reseller

https://www.sjcam.com/8-uk-warehouse

I bought mine from this seller

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SC06-Original-SJCAM-SJ4000-1080p-HD-Video-Camera-Helmet-Action-Sports-Camcorder-/191312708536?hash=item2c8b2043b8

eBay/PayPal protection should make any issue fairly painless.

Ah.....£33 isn't too bad I guess Thinking Is this a fake?

The genuine fake version has SJCAM wrote on the front, I'm not convinced there will be that much difference, but the fake fakes are probably only based on an older fake.

There's quite a community of enthusiasts for the SJ4000, if brave you can apply alternative firmware which unlocks more features etc.
The £33 one might have weaker mounts or something.
The gopro style ones always look a bit tellytubby on a helmet in any case.

Why is it better to have it on your helmet rather than the bike? Less jolting?

The really cheap cams are not as good and the SJ's don't cost a lot more, for comparison of the SJ footage I linked here is a £30 "1080" generic action cam (filmed at 720 because 1080 looked odd).

https://youtu.be/MkzBGMuUAc8

It's acceptable but the SJ is much better. Also the SJ has removable batteries so you can swap them out. If helmet mounting that's a big bonus compared to the cheaper ones.

The one you link is a knock off. Total lack of SJcam branding or even mention of it being one.

This how you ID a real one

Cam (Sj4000 non wifi)
https://i1249.photobucket.com/albums/hh504/wr6133/LPIC5219_zpskajmsqy7.jpg

Box
https://i1249.photobucket.com/albums/hh504/wr6133/LPIC5218_zps2t3vxmf4.jpg

Scratch off code thingy on box
https://i1249.photobucket.com/albums/hh504/wr6133/LPIC5217_zpsvba1tzt8.jpg

Manual
https://i1249.photobucket.com/albums/hh504/wr6133/LPIC5220_zpsdrhsz1nq.jpg

A final test can be done by updating the firmware. If you brick the cam then it is not an SJCam. You need to know when doing this though that there are 2 flavours of firmware for the SJcam SJ4000 (non wifi) one is for the older PCB, one for the newer. You can ID what you have by looking at the version in the menus on the cam it will either end in V01 or V02, you use the firmware to match.

I prefer it mounted on my lid because firstly less vibration and secondly it means the camera see's what I see (when I look around, etc).

Yes, and you're more likely to be looking at whomever mashes you up.

As long as the advert claims that it's an SJCAM. Some of them even say "Not SJCAM", which really sods up searching for them. Brick Wall

What about a mobius? They are diddy and do a waterproof enclosure.

Also aackable so you can move the lens away from the camera body and hook it into the vehicle electrics. They can be made into a dashcam: https://youtu.be/9qx5fgy8f28

It occurred to me that the camera body would probably fit inside a helmet between the padding like you do with an intercom speaker and you could mount the optics on the chinbar or through a modified air vent. The tricky bit would be waterproofing it once you'd done so.

This is how I mount mine, they come with loads of various bits and bobs so it could be done differently. My older cam I used to mount on the chin but I disliked it as I kept grabbing it and messing up its orientation when flipping up the front.

No

To be honest I think it's more of an asset than liability, if you get an arsey plod intent on giving you a NIP for something you may very well be holding proof of your own innocence.

Heat may become a problem with prolonged use but the actual guts of an SJ4000 are not much bigger than a match box.

I think I'd be wanting to do the capacitor hack and jack it into the bike electrics.

Something about having a lithium battery strapped to the side of my head on a fast moving vehicle that doesn't appeal.

Has anyone tried the Innovv C3 ? The camera bit is on a lead so a bit more options for discreet mounting and not looking a bit of a knob.

There's 90 or 120 degree camera options but I don't know which you'd want?

But you have a lead dangling, I think it would drive you mad.
The idea of a camera more or less fully integrated into a helmet seems so sensible I'm surprised it isn't already an off the shelf option - definite opportunity there I think.

Perhaps the camera could have bluetooth link to your phone and record to that so no sd card slot in your helmet to get wet etc.

I use a garmin virb. Reasonably small - not the smallest, but certainly better than the square go pro type cameras. Does GPS as well, so when you have a crash you can show the relevant authorities your speed, direction, position, everything. Found the footage invaluable in my recent didn't see ya mate. Never go anywhere without the camera now.

Quick. Enroll in a tinpot university design course and post a thread on here asking for marketing advice. Don't forget to include a pointless and badly constructed survey.

I'd disrecommend the Drift Stealth 2. Video quality is OK, but it fogs up, the battery/sockets cover is fiddly, the battery indicator is about as accurate as a motorcycle fuel gauge, it takes ages to charge and the battery life isn't all that.

On the other end of the Drift spectrum, I have a ghost (not the newer S model) waterproof as anything, battery lasts between 2-3 hrs, handy remote is handy,. Downside is whilst in my opinion the form factor is nicer than gopro for helmet mount, it is quite large when it's mounted to the helmet.

Shame about the stealth 2 issues, I'd been looking at that due to its more compact dimensions.

Use the advance search where you can remove anything with the word "Not" in it.

I thought it would go without saying that this would elide any listing containing the word "not" anywhere, like "not fake", but apparently it didn't. Razz

SJ4000 -"not sjcam"
or
SJ4000 "genuine sjcam"

The problem remains that geezers selling knock-offs on eBay aren't exactly famous for their honesty.

Caddy wrote:

Don't get me wrong, it's OK as a camera. I just don't think that the product quality is worth twice what a (genuine) SJCAM costs.

OK, the aftersales seems pretty good, but you could literally buy two SJ4000s instead and put one in drawer.

I'm still using an old Roadhawk Ride. Getting a bit long in tooth now, 720p, very few options and rubbish battery life in cold weather: ~30min (compared to ~80min on warm day). But, it's nice a dinky and perfect for helmet mounting.

There is an updated version - anyone tried it?
