Hello all! Its been a while since I last posted here.

Im back with avengance, or more accurately a full bike licence after passing my DAS last week first time! Very Happy

Ive found and bought a lovely Fazer 600, but the problem is my current insurance company wont insure me on anything bigger than a 125 until I send them proof of my full licence, apparently an email with a scan of my Cat A pass certificate wasnt good enough, so I have to wait for the DVLA to post me my new licence, and then post that to them. Needless to say this process is probably going to take weeks because insurance companies are a pain in the ass and dragging their heels.

I cant live with being on a 125 any longer, the honeymoon phase is well and truly dead, I want my Fazer and I want it now Twisted Evil

At first I thought I was in luck, eBike offer a monthly rolling insurance! Perfect! Insure it with them for a month, until my current insurers sort their act out, then go back to them. Simples.

Except eBike apparently no longer offer the monthly contract one, and I cant find anywhere that offers anything similar or any kind of short term insurance for bikes, the latest government fuckery messing up fair weather bikers and requiring SORN'd bikes to still be insured (or something like that, I dont quite understand it myself) seems to have all but killed the niche market of short term bike insurance.

The only other option I can see is to take out a brand new policy with a different company who wont ask for proof of my full licence, then either cancel it when I can switch back to my current insurers, or stick with them and cancel my current insurance. Either one is going to accrue a ballache of cancellation charges though, and if I leave my current insurers Im about 7 months into my next years no claims bonus which I dont really want to lose either Sad

The only one I found that offers fixed short term insurance was Bikesure, who quoted me at £188 (not a typo!) for a months insurance Shocked Im not quite THAT desperate...

Anyone been in this situation and got any suggestions for a workaround?

I mean I could just stay on my 125 for another month or so whilst waiting for all this bureaucratic bollocks to sort itself out, but I really REALLY dont want to. (as Im sure anyone whos gone from a 125 for a "big" bike will understand Mr. Green )

Just how much are your current insurer going to charge for the rest of the year. Compared to taking out a whole new policy?
Might be worth losing that 7 months NCD.

Just which broker are you using?

as above, work out whether its worth losing any months NCB if taking on a new policy.

Also, what insurers are asking for this? Cant remember ever being asked for mine before. Surely its down to you to tick the box to say all info is correct on the insurance form.

The way it went for me:

Cancel policy on 125 (£25 charge, £60 cancellation fee, I got about £23 refunded).

Comparison site for cheapest policy on your Fazer. Buy online. If they ask for proof, phone them, explain that license is still with DVLA and offer to send certificate. If they have any queries they can check with DVLA. They gave me 2 weeks grace to send license photocopy in. IIRC I then asked them to confirm who exactly I send license photocopy to, they replied to say don't bother now.

They might not even ask for your license, some of mine in the past haven't.

That's the actual definitive record. If it shows that you're licensed, you're licensed.

The insurer shouldn't even trust whatever happens to be on whatever copy of your photocard that you choose provide. It may be out of date or expired - I have four copies.

If they argue the toss, go via their complaints procedure.

Currently with Hastings Direct, rest of the year is about £80 wheras a whole new policy is about £2-300.

Yeah Ive never been asked for proof of my licence before, with cars or bikes. It seems like my insurers are just being a bit anal. All the quotes from comparison sites, not one of them wants proof. So looks like I might just be taking out a new policy

handy, didnt know you could do that.
Checked mine, and apparently I still only have a provisional motorbike licence, so the DVLA havent even processed my new licence yet, much less sent it to me Sad

The only lot who ever asked me was eSure, or possibly their underwriter(s). They were happy to accept a blurry picture of my license, which proves nothing about nothing.

Fire in with a complaint anyway. It costs you nothing, and it might piss on some bean counter's chips.

I have been asked by several companies for licence proof.

Generally only asked if I jump ship to another outfit.

In the words of T. Jones, "It's Not unusual boyo".

So, update! Typically as soon as I took out a new policy and phoned my current insurers, they changed their mind when I threatened to cancel my policy, turns out they WILL accept my pass certificate as proof of my licence rather than wait weeks for the DVLA.

So now Ive had to cancel my new policy (thanks EU for introducing 14 day right to cancel periods <3 ) and gone back to my old insurer because theyre £1 more expensive per month, but I wont lose my NCB and they also offered pillion passenger cover and can ride any bike including other people's on my policy.

Fazer is now sat on my driveway! Very Happy Bringing her home was the most fun Ive ever had on 2 wheels, absolutely dumps all over the ER6 I was learning on!

Lesson learnt: getting angry (in a polite way) at people over the phone sorts most problems because the customer is always right! (apparently!) Razz

This doesn't sound right. It's a 5 minute job to get proof of your license these days, it's all online, there shouldn't ever have been any concern over that. Any decent insurer should have just asked you for a check code and be done with it.

As of this morning Im *still* waiting to get my licence back from the DVLA, thats the main problem. Their website still says I only have a provisional cat A entitlement on my licence. So even if my insurers did want a check code, it would still say Im a learner Rolling Eyes Its only been 6 (working) days since I passed my test, and the examiner said it can take up to 20 working days for DVLA to sort it all out...

And basically I was far too impatient to wait for all this heel dragging to take weeks until I could ride my new bike. Mr. Green

Nothing should take this long in the age of the internet! How hard could it be for some sort of computer link between DVSA and DVLA where they push a button and it upgrades your licence there and then or something? Or at least within 24 hours.

I insured my triple before I passed my mod 2, Arriva (via Carole Nash, who will be getting binned by renewal time,) gave me 30 days to pass or they said I would need to cancel the policy, pay it off and take out another. Put a bit of undue pressure on me, wouldn't recommend it.

However, all is well. If slightly pricey.
