Have purchased a viper lid with Bluetooth speaker & mic, though am NOT happy with low volume and terribly tinny sound, plus mic seems poor so I'm told.
Would also feel a system that protected my ears from motorway din would be cool too, as again the Viper does not! Anyone out there fitted a system that they swear by?? One that feeds decent quality sound - either music, Sat nav, coms or phone - then I'd love to hear about it.
Self fitted kit is no issue but just after something that works well!

I was happy with a very cheap Chinese setup and now a slightly less cheap one. The key is positioning the speakers perfectly, they need to be lined up to your ears and not too far away (some have sticky pads to move them closer). If they are slightly misaligned then the sound quality will be crap.

Sena SMH10-11. Foam ear plugs.

Great combination for music/calls/Google Voice & protecting your hearing.

Look for the Italian stuff Scala.

I have a Scala system (Made for Schuberth) (Schuberth SCR) in my Schuberth C3 Flip-Front.

The system is generally spot on and M/way/Autobann don't harm the noise I get from my Sydney Devine's Greatest Hits mP3s

My Garmin Shat-Nav and Mobile all BT to the SRC.

There is sometimes poor reproduction but that is usually due to a bad update of the BT software of the helmet or the devices. Re-install fixes that.

You do need proper ear protection on a bike if you value your hearing. There is no ifs or butts.

I wear custom moulded plugs in my lugs and the SRC can blast through without much loss.

There was another outfit Autocom who make stuff for inside helmets but they are expensive and the last guy I talked to from there was full of it. So much so I bought the Schuberth at £200 (RPI was £300).

I'm on to them Schuberthsons now funnily enough. Smile

My wife and I have been using the Sena SMH10 since May 2013. It has been reliable -- still works fine, even after more than two years of use -- and the battery life is good enough. They easily last all day of listening to music, sat-nav and chatting. We can hear well enough, even on the motorway, but that's with ear plugs. I use foam ones and my wife uses the custom-fit silicon ones.

I only use mine when I'm two-up or need to use the sat-nav. When not, I take the intercom off and just have the mounting on my helmet. That hasn't caused any issues, either.

I've been using the interphone fm4 , it's been great , I can hear it over my ear plugs , connects to 3 others as well as another make with different Bluetooth .
Connects to your phone and sat nav and has a rds radio .
Lasts a good 6-7 hours talk time on a full charge .
Easy set up to , I think it's good value to .

Just my penny .

Yes. I fitted an ebay bluetooth thing to the chin guard of my lid, and swapped my own preferred, phillips in-ear headphones, which are excellent. Some minor effort involved to waterproof it, I made a thread couple months ago. For music only, it works well. I have no desire to ever phone or talk while riding so cant say.. Battery life is >2 hours, maybe more. Bigger replacements are very cheap. The 3 buttons are in a good place to press while riding.

Am I the only person who has an issue with strapping a lithium battery pack to their actual head?

It's not even like a camera on a plastic mount that's probably going to come off and explode in a massive fireball some distance away in the event of a serious impact.

Probably.

Aside from the fact that most of these devices consist of two parts, the bit that's attached to the helmet and the actual electronics gubbins that attaches to it. Most of these attachments are flimsy enough that if you hit anything with any real force it'd break.

So, what are you expecting to happen in this accident that would cause the battery to explode, because any accident that caused that, I wouldn't be expecting the rider to have survived anyway.

Fairly flimsy mount, my first one tore straight off in a crash. Current one while not as flimsy would definitely break off with minimal force.

I suspect you massively underestimate the minimum force it can take to fatally damage a lithium battery. It just needs to be enough to rupture a plastic membrane inside or allow water into the casing. Even tiny amounts of water and lithium do not play nice.

Good to hear they break-away. I do worry about these integrated helmets in particular.

Li battery fires are a subject of some concern in the field of head torches. I know because I've been researching which chinese knock-off head torch to buy and it turns out there are whole forums full of collectors.

I have a pair of old Scala units that I'm happy to experiment with if you can suggest a way I might cause the battery to explode/burn relevant to what might be expected in daily bike use or a serious crash.

I reckon even if I submerged one for a week, and hit the other repeatedly with a hammer, neither would do anything drastic. I'd actually kind of like to be proven wrong.

You need earplugs at motorway speeds. Wind noise is plenty sufficient to do serious damage. Sena helmet with noise cancellation gubbins may be as good, but I don't think that's come to market yet.

Check you have the gain set to maximum at every stage in your signal chain. My phone does weird stuff in turning internal levels down if it thinks I plugged some earphones in, then throwing a paddy if I turn them up loud.

Look at what time the regulars on here are using in conjunction with ear plugs. Cheap chineese may just not be as loud and there is some hit and miss.

Fitness for purpose: if you are sold a system for motorcycle use, if it is not sufficiently loud enough when you have the required ear plugs to maintain sound levels within eu guidelines, then you are BY LAW entitled to a refund and this superceeds any 'but our policy' bullshit.
