So after my accident, I'm going to get the ZX10R back on the road. Definitely keeping the bike regardless of what the insurance companies agree to, so I'm best starting to get it back together sooner rather than later.

Pre-Accident:-

Post-Accident:-

List of damage was- All fairing panels, starter cover on LHS of engine, bar end weights, left switchgear, speedometer casing, headlight, left foot peg and gear lever, frame sliders and paddock bobbins, rear axle bolt, rear light, mirrors, grips, brake fluid reservoir (front), fuel tank... Think that's it. £5,360 with OEM parts, no thanks.

So, began buying bits for it last week. Found this bargain set of fairings on eBay. It's a chinese clone set, but it's missing one inner panel which I have a spare of. They've got a few surface scratches but all lugs are in tact and there are no cracks at all, never even been fitted to a bike.

Can't argue for £150-

They're a different green to the actual Kawasaki lime green on the bike, but I was expecting this anyway

Comparison, top panel is an original one-

You can see the front mudguard as well in that photo, it's the only panel I dislike, the black bits at the side are just painted on, on the OEM model they're separate plastic parts that clip on. They'll do for now though.

Arrived today:-

Only bought it for the gear lever, but then realised when it was on its way, that it also covers me for the left foot peg too, good catch at £7.

Next up is the fuel tank, they're like rocking horse shit to find, there was one put on eBay last night for a 2004, no dents, but it was black. Since the fairings are the wrong colour anyway, I don't care. Got it for £150, which isn't bad as there are quite a lot on eBay with dents for over £200. Quote for painting everything has been £220 which I suppose is reasonable, though I'm tempted to do it myself.

Next update when the fuel tank arrives, I can get the bike out and give it a good ride and see what it's like. I've ridden it since the accident, but you couldn't get it out of first because of that gear lever.

Going to get rid of the Racefit as well in favour of one of these - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/KAWASAKI-ZX10R-NINJA-2004-2005-GP2-MINI-SATIN-EXHAUST-/291599598139?hash=item43e4b0c23b:g:4Q0AAOSw37tWBp6v. I can't see it being any louder than the racefit, and it should look really good, as I can get rid of the exhaust hangar and clear up that space under the rear seat unit. Alternatively I'll go the other way and get a nice carbon tipped Akrapovic or something.

Updates to follow soon...

Guy on eBay in the states has a supercharger kit for reasonable money...

Anyway, reality.

Had the bike out on Tuesday for a proper run. Just cable tied the headlight in place and the right-side fairing was just left on with just the crash protector holding it on. Done progressively faster runs up a nice big open road just to check that nothing was going to feel wrong mechanically. Everything felt fine until I hit three figures, after which the headlight flipped up over the bars, shining straight into my face and the (old) fairing panel on the right snapped off and flew off into an adjacent field. All in all, a terrifying ride. Makes the ZX7R I'm using just now feel like a sensible commuter. It just gave me the morale boost I needed to know I'm doing the right thing by ploughing money into it.

Front air duct tube thing arrived the other day. Massively integral part, the whole front fairing/mirrors/lights/dash all bolt onto it. Left switch gear also came, along with the fuel tank which is in very good shape considering the price.

Won a mint condition headlight the other night, and a similar condition set of stock mirrors. Bought a brake fluid reservoir and two of those big bleeding syringe kits to make life easy. Got a cheap set of bar end weights and grips, still waiting for the dash housing.

Was out in the garage trying to get the crash protector off and noticed that there was a tiny bit of oil on the bottom of the starter cover. On close inspection, I think the scuffs on the starter cover have been just enough to put a hairline crack in it. There are a couple on eBay though, so I'll grab one tonight. Also need to get a battery charger, as the battery on the bike is pretty much dead, wouldn't even turn on the dash. Tried the battery from the ZX7R and it worked fine. Ended up buying another integrated rear light, too. The tail tidy on the bike doesn't have any bolting points for the indicators...

So, current action plan is-

-Wait for everything to arrive.
-Put the bike back together ignoring the fairing and tank mismatch for now
-Ride it to work for a week or so and keep a close eye on it, check the battery is holding a charge well, check all the engine covers for oil, fuel etc
-If all is well, arrange for the fairings and tank to be painted.

After that, it should be basically back to how it was before. Still not sure about the exhaust swap, I'll see how many complaints I get when I start using it again.

So, list of everything that's arrived so far.

Fairing kit
Mirrors
Headlight
Grips
Bar End Weights
Fuel Tank
Upper Cowling Bracket
Air Duct
Speedometer Casing
Brake Reservors
Last but not least, the starter motor cover. Which doesn't fit.

I was skeptical about buying a chinese replacement part for an engine bit, my skepticism was well served. When installing the engine cover, I noticed that the hole for the starter motor is actually a tad off. It still fit on with a rubber mallet though, but when I tightened the bolts, it bloody cracked.

You can tell it's the wrong shape, because when you take it off, the crack resets and it joins backup almost flush.

So, not off to a great start. Once back from work tomorrow I'll get the brake res fitted and bleed the front, on tuesday night I'll try get the tank and rear light wiring done, then I'll try do the fairings.

Not that it'll matter until I get the engine cover mess sorted...

So to conclude this thread I guess-

Got all the bits and got the bike to a running/daily useable state. This was after I noticed a crack in the frame, so I sold it to a guy who wanted to fix it and use it on the track. Got not a bad price for it all things considered, and used the money as deposit for my new bike

Riding this to work with the race tyres on it, plus the cold, wet windy weather was all sorts of terrifying.
