Probably should be in the geek zone but there's quite a lot of people on here who do this stuff, whether pro / amateur, etc.

What's your preferred video editing software and why?

What do you use it for?

I've watched several videos on this but does anyone know the best way to motion track objects that doesn't involve doing hundreds of keyframe adjustments?

Been using Sony Vegas 12 for a few years now, it's good but maybe there's something better out there? I also use After Effects but only for motion graphic editing, have heard Premier is worth a look as well.

I'm very familiar with Adobe products and use Photoshop / Illustrator day in and out for 10+ years.

Mostly, I just want to edit go pro footage of bikes and find a solution to track blurring out faces / reg plates, etc.

I use FCPX. Was trained on FCP 6 at university but just got into using X for the ease of quick editing with straight off the camera footage. Have used it for many a paid project. Magnetic timeline is handy at times and I'm used to it now. Background rendering is very useful and works well with my Canon XF100 files. Use it for on-location video editing, quick ride footage edits and longer documentary film-making.

Try experimenting with the motion tracking function in After Effects.

Premier allows you to motion track by adding a few key points over a number of frames
I've used it to mask faces in video's wasn't to difficult
the more movement the more points you need though no real way around that

For n00bs who are not trained in software but want reasonably powerful video editing, cyberlink power director is pretty good. Without any assistance I managed to edit a few videos. It is basic in comparison to some packages available though.

I have an older version of Adobe Premiere and it still takes some beating, I was impressed by the free version of Da Vinci resolve:

You can spend many hours just getting to grips with different software though.
Agree Cyberlink is easier and useful, also gopro studio is easy and free.

Have a go with openshot.

Is free.

A tad unstable on my system (mint Debian) but it's the price you pay for using unstable OS repositories. Not really a big problem, I just make sure I save regularly.

You can make it work with most things, it can import effects filters from other software too.

Don't know if it can motion track but fuzzy overlays are a relative piece of piss.

Sony Vegas 12 allows you to do this but then you have to keep positioning the box as the item you're tracking moves from frame to frame.

Are you saying it does it automatically? I can draw the tracking anchors and it will track it without adjusting key frames?

You set two points on a timeline, and your object tracks between them at a speed you control from their position in time.
If you want more complicated moves you need numerous points setting, but you don't do it frame by frame.

Premiere 6 CC tracks automatically for you (see the video link I posted)
standard version 6 as doggone says you can do it with 2 key frames provided the movement is not jerky

That's the shit right there!

Drives me mad trying to track reg plates in Go Pro footage, to the point that I can never be arsed doing the video in the first place because I know how bad that can get, especially tracking multiple plates / faces, etc.

Nice one Thumbs Up
