The House of Lords, which is dominated by unelected Labour, Liberal, and SNP wankers, has this evening voted to allow children to vote in the forthcoming (maybe) European Referendum Bill.
I'm not comfortable allowing adolescents to decide The Nation's future.
What are your thoughts?

Me neither. Especially in very complex issues like this.

And also, on the other foot, if they are fit to vote in this, then why not in every election.

As opposed to the current system where it's mostly old people who vote, and what they vote for is to ruin the futures of young people in order to benefit themselves in the short term. Tripled tuition fees, youth unemployment, exported all the introductory jobs to China, unaffordable massively inflated housing prices, and the list goes on.

Could the children be torn away from Fallout 4 to actually vote though? Unless they do it via an app or a Call of Duty mod or something?

Most 16 year olds won't give a crap, I certainly wouldn't have.

I reckon most of those who do vote will tick whichever box mummy and daddy tell them to.

No, I don't think it's a good idea. We complain that many of our political masters haven't experienced enough of the life that most of Joe Public lead and so can't understand how people feel about various issues, so how can anyone expect school-age folks to understand?

As pointed out by c_dug, most won't care, as being under the supervision of parents, much isn't relevant to them. It's only when you go out into the world to fend for yourself that you begin to gain a real understanding of many political issues, as you become more directly affected by them.

It's every bit as cynical and sleekit a move as when the SNP pulled it in Scootchland.

What's amusing is that Plaid Commie reckon that Scootch Yoofs are anti-Union (UK), whereas the leftie lords reckon they're pro-Union (EU). Make up your minds, yoofs.

I'll check with Master Borg later about the amount of pro-Brussels brainwashing that they're getting these days. I suspect it's a lot to very.

I find with my kids and their mates that they will argue the toss about anything, then a couple of days later will find themselves repeating the last 'logical' viewpoint put to them about the given subject. Their minds are infinitely pliable at that age.

Suggesting that kids be allowed to vote will be a calculated move on the part of the legislators, as they have to be sure that their viewpoint is the last 'logical' one the kids hear prior to polling day. I suspect the social media campaign is already being planned...

Imagine this bloke with a silly hipster beard, good looking multiracial mates and always laughing - this is what our youngsters will be persuaded by rather than parental opinions....

It's pretty obvious and a dirty trick from the left again. The last time they did this was when Labour split Scotchland into tiny little constituencies to increase their chances of beating the Tories. Unfortunately, this came back to bite them as the SNP practically wiped them out at the last election.

Younger people tend to be more left wing/liberal, this trend shifts more to the right as they get older and wiser.

Hell, I even helped vote Tony Blair in when I was younger!

Oh I say yes then. Anything that increases the blood pressure of the older right wingers has to be a good thing for the NHS and the economy. Laughing

I think all 16 year olds should be able to vote TBH, if you are old enough to pay taxes you should be old enough to vote.

Be careful what you wish for. The Labour pushed boundary reform ended up giving the UK 50 odd SNP MP's in Parliament.

Giving the vote to 16 year olds will only benefit one side of the spectrum and not give a balanced opinion. In the near future, it will also swing political decision to a certain religion too.

Contrary to what the ONS have made people believe, Oliver is not really the most popular male baby name in the UK.

Quote:
Yet when you look beyond the ONS press release – which makes no mention of the name Mohammud other than revealing that that variant of spelling is the most popular name in London – you get a different story. Examine the spreadsheet on the ONS website, and the raw figures reinforce the BabyCentre survey: Mohammed really is the single most popular name. The totals it gives are Muhammad 3588, Mohammed 2536, Mohammad 1116, a total of 7240. There were, by contrast, 6649 Olivers, 5804 Jacks and 5379 Harrys. You can get to 7555 if you add the Olivers to the 906 Ollies. But then Oliver and Ollie are not really the same name. The latter is a shortened, bastardised version of the former.

Muhammad/Mohammed/Mohammad, on the other hand, are different transliterations of the same name, and are pronounced the same. There is no other name where different spellings come close to challenging it.

Ten years ago, the ONS was quite happy to announce in its press release that Mohammed – then apparently the preferred spelling — had entered the top 20 most popular baby’s names. But now it seems it has become shy of informing us that it is now the single most popular boys’ name in England and Wales.

Having lots of baby Mohammuds/Mohammeds/Mohammads running around doesn’t turn us into an Islamic country, of course, because Islamic names are easily outnumbered by Christian ones overall. But if our national statistical agency is going to publish a list of popular names I don’t see why it shouldn’t let us know the true picture, which is after all surely of as much interest to multiculturalists as it is to Islamophobes.

The government have been didling with the boundaries for millenium.

The bludy Romans were at it too. Very Happy

There are political strategies based on working the rules.

Don't submit your paper/bill at certain times as you won't have a quorum or they will lobby/blackball/simply talk for ages until it's out of time.

Boundaries are just a tool. The fucking Torys will change it back if they want or will find a way to do something.

Sorry, I fail to see how any of that was relevant to the post? The boundary comment was nothing to do with the main point of the post about children getting the vote.

It was merely mentioned as an example to show how political parties meddling in things to increase their chances, can often backfire on them.

This voting age was clearly voted in by Labour/SNP because the younger are considerably more likely to vote for them.

Aye OK.

Im not sure giving 16 and 17 year olds the vote is a good idea but this has to be the weakest argument against it of all time.

How to get free votes for your thing? Let the kids do it. All brainwashed by their parents and Tv, not capable of their own thinking, not having a clue (which the vast majority also don't have) and very easily manipulatable. Thinking

Just out of my own curiosity, how many of you actually know what the EU is and what are the benefits of such a organisation? If the general idea of the EU is feck the Brussels, then you should not be allowed to have a say in this.

I'm not supporting the EU here, nor any other organisation, but the pure ignorance is why so many countries joined and the pure ignorance is why they want all out now. Plus, as the elections are behind the corner in many countries in the Europe, this is a very strong political question and people want to hear about leaving the EU.
