You'll only do it once, I did the exact same thing tightening up a bolt in my clutch basket. Turns out the torque wrench magically decided to break and would not click, now I test mine before I use it by putting it in a vice on a low torque and making sure it will click. ____________________ Well, you know what they say. And that is exactly why you do not use a torque wrench when you've got no idea of what you are doing. The lever is quite big with this one, so over tightening stuff if you set the wrench wrong is very easy. By the way, the caliper is quite possibly made out of aluminium, so there shouldn't be that much of torque on the bolts anyway. I use a small ratchet wrench to tighten stuff like this and I can be sure that with a small wrench I can't generate so much torque I'd snap a bolt OR ruin the thread in the caliper.
With a small ratchet wrench you can be 100% sure you gave it enough torque, yet you won't be able to snap the bolt. If you snap the bolt with the small wrench, then you are not a human, or you're an arm-wrestling champ. ____________________ '87 Honda XBR 500, '96 Kawasaki ZX7R P1, '90 Honda CB-1, '88 Kawasaki GPz550, MZ 150 ETZ

Basic, useful stuff, no drama, a pleasant voice, no five-quarter-turns-in-a-circle, what's not to like?
Torque wrench fail is the perfect example of why I use a deflecting beam wrench and some mechanical sympathy. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

It's in the right section, descriptively titled, and delivers exactly what it promises. Doesn't leave much to rant about. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

I use a 3/8 drive Draper torque wrench on the discs' used a 1/4 drive on the cylinder head nuts of my Aprilia at the specified 19NM & 1 of the stud bolts spun round at 14NM cost me another engine case as fixing with a helicoil didn't work. from that moment i stopped using a torque wrench on cylinder nuts, i just do that part & set the squish by feel with a normal 1/4 ratchet |

I have that exact same torque wrench (presume it's the same one as in the Torque Check SV650... video), and to be honest I don't entirely trust it. Nearly did what you did to one of my spark plugs.

The torque wrench range is what is important.
Because most rely on a spring they are only really accurate near the middle of the range where the spring force is more uniform.
More expensive tools use a better spring with a wider force range so can have a more accurate use between the top and bottom of their scale.
The most accurate wrenches use an electronic load-cell and those are subject to the same manufacturing restraints as spring models.
There are problems with digital tools but if you know those limits then they are fine.
For real accuracy, if you need to, a smaller wrench is the tool. And for 'small' bolts like those caliper bolts 3/8"drive is fine.
1/2drive are not as accurate for small bolts. If it's worth torquing then why use something that's going to be +- 5lbs/ft? MAy as well hoi it tight by hand. ____________________ Disclaimer: The comments above may be predicted text and not necessarily the opinion of MCN. |
