Hi every one
I have started to have a charging issue with my bike SV650s curvy.
When I first start it up I have 14.5v from the regulator rectifier +- .5 between 1300rpm and 5000rpm
Then when I put head lights on it will drop slightly, 2 to 3 mins later volts drop to around 12.3 turn head lights off and its climbs back up.
I have cleaned all connectors. I have been through the charging fault finder that is floating around the forum and have ruled out the stator but because of the volts dropping with the head lights could it be the regulator rectifier braking down under load is there anything else I could check
Thanks

and also battery holds charge fine can charge up and leave for a week no real difference in charge

Either the headlight is drawing more power than the bike can supply, or the bike isn't providing enough power.

To see if the problem lies around the headlight and its wiring, try turning everything else on (inc holding on the brake) but not the headlight and see if the problem persists. The combined current drain from sidelight, tail, brake and indicators should add up to about the same as the headlight.

If the problem goes away, I would be looking for a high resistance situation in the headlight wiring. If the problem stays, I would look at the charging system. Reg/rec is cheaper and easier to get than a stator, and more likely to fail.

If you go down the route of replacing the reg/rec, I highly recommend fitting a MOSFET one. Far more stable output and far more reliable.

Battery is how old?
Regardless of age it sounds like the battery is shorting.

You need to test the battery using a High Rate Dis-charger.

A battery can hold a charge for a while but break down when sufficient load is applied.

If possible,

Remove the plug leads
Connect your meter across the battery terminals.
A healthy 12v battery should show 12.5/13.0 volts.
Turn the bike over and watch the voltage.
It should drop two or three volts as the starter applies load.
(Since the battery has/should have massive amounts of power reserve.)
If the voltage drops to very low then the battery is shorted and needs to be replaced.

You can't do this with the engine able to start as you need the load applied for a second or more.

ANd it looks better on a needle type volt meter. Smile

You could google fcuk out of 'test battery using starter' for more info.

susuki.. test the continuity on the phase windings of the alternator..
ie the 3 white wires going into the reg.rectifier.

As others have said, drop test the battery first. Easiest, cheapest thing to do initially.

Right typing time

MCN
Battery is just over 12 months old it is a YUSA, When cranking the bike the volts drop to about 10.5v
That was cranking for around 5 seconds.

Copycat73
I have tested the stator continuity and output AC voltage all really good and have checked the connectors there is no damage or burn marks they look really good. ( For the age)

Robby
I will do that in the morning when I get home (Bloody Night Shifts) and let you know tomorrow.

Thanks every one

Has the bike been left unused for any long length of time like a few weeks? Does it have an alarm?

load test seems OK.
Dig deeper now.

'Cunt'inuity of charging stuff as suggested by Copycat73

Right tested with the head light off using indicators and brake with sidelight on, and yes it is dropping right down, tried it with sidelight off so no power is going to the headlights at all and it drop right down. You can see the voltage going up and down as the indicators flash.

I can also see the clock back lights dimming with the indicators on when moving a a good pace so it is not just when at idle.

Copycat73

no mate same in from when I got it around 4 years now.

Thanks

I will look in to getting a mosfet RR and upgrading the connectors to some weather packs

conclusion

RR taken off and there is a gap where the back of it is potted, had a little poke and the whole bloody thing comes out of the heat sink, All the insides and the back where it would press up to the inside of the heat sink is corroded and it stinks of burnt electrics.

Also looking at the RR it is not stock there is no markings on the thing of its specifications.

I have fitted a used mosfet RR I got on the bay and have fitted some upgraded connector and wiring and have gone from the RR direct to the battery as the stock set up went in to the loom via some piss ant wiring to the battery. also the new to me RR is a lot bigger in size so should help dissipate heat better.

Thanks for the help every one Very Happy
