The thing that bugs me most about winter driving

It's not the wind or the rain or the snow or the salt.

It's suicide stealth motorcyclists and scooters in the dark. Black jackets, black trousers, black boots, black helmet, just a little blob of white headlight bobbling along if you're lucky.

Diving across the road between cars, or toddling along the bypass in the gutter, entirely relying on traffic to see and avoid them, not a shred of effort made to make themselves visible or take any responsibility for themselves.

It's simply unreasonable to put the burden of their safety on us.

I've noticed a new pedestrian trend commuting home at 6am the past week. They dress all in black and carry a torch that must be hooked up to a fusion reactor giving it the power of 3 suns, upon hearing you coming along the road they proceed to beam it right in your face.

Even in the city this happens though!

A few weeks ago I came too close for comfort in hitting a woman and her dog crossing the road. Pedestrian lights on red, my lights on green. Heavy flowing traffic, which I was a part of, not filtering. I had filtered to the front of the lights at the junction before mine went green.

It wasn't until I was half way across that I was able to see this woman in her entirely dark clothing, and her small dog walking behind her, slowly crossing the road.

I'm not sure too many people grasp the concept that in order to avoid accidents, it helps to make yourself seen. It really is hard to spot these nighttime ninjas sometimes.

I nearly mowed down a group of trick-or-treaters and a woman dressed as Morticia who had stepped into the road to stop traffic. Too late, I was past. Not one of them had the good sense to dress as Casper.

They'll get the chance to be a ghost for real if they keep that up.

Vehicles aren't actually out to hit them, so why not make just a teeny tiny effort to do something to be seen? Why is it so hard for them to understand how vulnerable and invisible they are?
