Had surgery recently so been off the bike for over a week now. Had a thought.... is there anything I should be doing whilst it's not being used? Start it up and let it run for while etc?

It's a 125 manual with choke

Cheers

A whole week of nothing?

No, unless you are bored?

Starting it up is the worse than not starting it up. Most of the damage to engines happen when engine is cold.....

As in - when heating up from being cold?

Otherwise, I'm not sure I follow this ...

Your engine wears faster whilst cold than hot. Starting it up and not going anywhere is just needlessly running the engine cold, and stopping it before it had a chance to warm up.

I'm dubious to how much this really affects things though in the real world.

My bike has gone months of nothing. How new is your battery as that is the only thing likely to let you down if it is getting on a bit.

When you eventually can use the bike.. depending on the design of the choke just put it on full or open it all the way (if manual spring loaded) and then follow the start up procedure for your bike, so for me it would be full choke, electric starter and then a little bit of throttle afterwards. I was always advised don't hold the starter for longer than 5 seconds, also don't expect the bike to first up first time.. rather a handful of tries. Be prepared for multiple attempts and don't prolong your ride by flooding the engine and creating more issues, if doesn't start after so many attempts leave it and come back to it after 10-15 minutes (timeframe is based on other peoples post, no actual experience of flooding an engine).

If there's no luck with the above then could try either a kick start or a bump start. Or just put your battery on charge.

Use this time to your advantage, if nothing needs fixing, servicing or adjusting then I'd be giving it the best clean of it's life and applying some ACF-50. Clean and lube the chain.

Last of all just keep poking it and cross of the days on the calendar until you can use it again.

Thumbs Up

my thundercat has been sitting at my parents for at least 9months without being started. I went back there a couple of weeks ago and started up fine after two cranks.

Just lock it up, if you've got heated grips, make sure they are off. A friend had a week off work and left his heated grips on and killed the battery. Leave and forget.

When you start your engine up from cold, the viscosity of the oil is thicker - therefore it doesnt circulate around your engine as it would when the oil gets up to operating temperature - therefore the moving parts inside the engine will wear more rapidly as there is not enough lubrication to prevent it.

So basically, everytime you start your engine up when cold it causes some degree of wear........... so if you are not riding it - don't start it! Thumbs Up

If you must do something:

Turn fuel tap to off - if you have one
Drain carbs - if you can do above

Take battery into the warm indoors, place on plastic tray/in icecream tub if you're remotely worried about it making a mess, charge battery. Charge again before replacing in bike. Or use maintenance charger, possibly leaving battery in bike if larmjng situation allows.

Failing that, have a booster pack/car and jump leads/spare battery ready when you go to start the bike again. Remember you tuned the fuel off. If you have a vacuum operated fuel pump, have fun priming it.

Just check your tyre pressures when you finally come to use it.

Depends where you store the bike? Starting up once a week is bad because the engine wears when cold, when stationary the bike cannot heat properly, finally water condenses when cold, so for long term you may put some plastic bag on the exaust and seal the air filter too to prevent water condense entering the engine.

Fill the tank to the top with fuel to prevent rusting and add fuel stabiliser.

3 weeks is not a long term.

For 3 weeks you may remove the battery and keep it indoors or better attach permanent charger.
