Saw the above advertised as a black Friday deal. Will probably be pants, but I've had a punt for £20!

That is ridiculously cheap, what's the consensus with these then?

Buy cheap buy twice? I'm half tempted just to see what the quality of the thing is like and try and record a couple of bits using all sorts of angles.. at that price it doesn't matter if it's left on the M25 Mr. Green

The cheap shite 720p ones or the SJcam?

The SJcams have a fairly large following and for just over £40 you can't fault them.

Techmoan review https://www.techmoan.com/blog/2014/2/3/the-sj4000-action-camera-review.html

Some footage (pootube kills the quality somewhat)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nv6uoem3MxI

I wouldn't bother with the 720p copy cams, £20 more for the proper SJcam is not a lot.

I have an SJ4000 and it's brilliant, make sure you get a genuine one, not a knock-off.

Fully aware this is probably going to be crap, but as a stop gap till I can afford a good one, I'll be interested to see how it does.

I'll put some footage up (in the next couple hours) of dark rural and dark streetlit.

Dark rural is pants though, streetlit is ok.

if "pants" means "i can see a bit but not much" it will be better than what i'm using. even on street lit streets i i see nowt much but black

also pausing vids to get REG numbers. my camera doesnt like it depending on light/ time of day/whether its having its period so whilst basic liability is covered getting a reg number in an incident might be difficult

If you are coming across idiots, why not just vocalise their ID and let the camera record it, make, model and reg.

I'll let you judge, YouTube kills the quality a bit but it should give an idea. First 30 secs is dark rural, fuck all can be seen other than what the headlight illuminates. After that is street lit and it's not bad. All on stock settings if you play with the settings it could probably be improved a bit.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpSNBl1KPMk&feature=youtu.be

The raw video will get number plates with screenshots, fine in the day, ok in streetlight, in full darkness an illuminated plate would need to be really close. Problem I have currently is the outside of the casing misting slightly and freezing a bit which slightly blurs the entire image (commuting home at 0600).

bugeye, i have done in the past but its not always as easy as that. i tend to focus more on keeping myself alive than letting something happen and shouting out a reg number

the rural part look much the same as my current Roam2 but the street lit bit is much clearer (maybe street lamps are brighter where you live Laughing )

might get one to mount on the bike Thumbs Up

Sharpe, I gave up with the roam2. As you say, its crap at night but to be fair, contour have said it's not designed for low light conditions.

My refurbished Drift HD is better in the dark.

i like it most of the time. fits on the lid nicely and is fairly streamlined but i wish the quality was that little bit better and it had a night time mode.

doesn't look like the roam3 is any better in that respect.

That is a lemon, if you need good camera try Mobius which is 1080p resolution:

https://www.gearbest.com/action-cameras/pp_219132.html?currency=GBP&gclid=Cj0KEQiAj8uyBRDawI3XhYqOy4gBEiQAl8BJbWp34ycJZs-Ij_BOw65mTB3zkr7nEJj-W2SmXfsV1YMaAqQb8P8HAQ

The best value for money camera I have found so far is this Firefly 6s model with 4k resolution which compares only with GoPro 4 Black:

https://www.gearbest.com/action-cameras/pp_239152.html?currency=GBP&gclid=Cj0KEQiAj8uyBRDawI3XhYqOy4gBEiQAl8BJbVAkYAKaEsH82ezemSyeJInm_uTNzp35ciDICsB69IIaAiYO8P8HAQ

Video resolution: 4K at 24fps, 2.5K at 30fps, 1080P at 60fps / 30fps, 720p at 120fps, VGA at 30fps

The one you have listed may do or may not do 720p at best.

I have similar camera knock off of the SJ4000 knock off of GoPro and I have to say it works to an extent see sample footage here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRQ9QZnqrM4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQBACAXIN2E

Better spent £60 and get the latest GoPro knock off: Firefly 6S.

That is very tempting, has anyone here dealt with Gearbest before? I'm seeing mixed reviews at best, seems pretty troublesome when the stuff is coming from China and not their UK warehouse?
