Doubled, they say, but if we're rounding off, it's closer to trebling.
An optimistic £10 million in projected savings (how so, when they have to post out refund cheques now?) versus an extra £55 million in lost revenue.

Oh, do sod off. More people are avoiding being mugged, crack a smile.
So, what response? Faster horses and better flintlocks for the highwaymen, or just tear down the whole tottering Kafkaesque edifice and raise the money through fuel duty or general taxation?
17507294706 litres of petrol + 31129807692 litres of diesel, I make that about 12p a litre on fuel duty to raise £6 billion, and we can pack half of the DVLA back off down the Pot Noodle mines. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

This new tax malarkey, I am going to pick up a 4 x 4 next Saturday, it has MOT and I have arranged a cheapish insurance policy to start on the day in question. However it is SORN. My understanding is that if I be a good boy and pay the eco mental tax, then the DVLA will upon receipt of the change of keeper cancel the eco mental tax I have just paid and send a refund to the previous keeper? |

They insist you cannot transfer the tax, so as to make more money and then say you can't do it on line, but have to go to a post office. What do they expect to happen ____________________ Triumph Trophy Launch Edition |

If you tax with the new keeper number it shouldn't be cancelled by the change of keeper, but as always with the DVLA, you get that thrill of wondering if they'll spack it up.
| Copycat73 wrote: | worringly those that will evade VED also have a propensity to avoid other "impositions " like a licence , mot & insurance .. |
I'm not remotely bothered about whether they avoid VED or not. It may be correlated with other issues, but is it? Are more folk driving uninsured?
Even if they were, could you show even the thinnest shred of causation that not paying VED results in driving without license, insurance and/or an MOT?
Heck, if we're looking for correlations, then there are 350,000 more untaxed vehicles since 2013, and 590,000 new immigrants. </Hitler>
The nub of my gist is that the whole system of using VED to mug the populace is burdensome and completely unnecessary given the simpler alternatives available. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure the previous keeper only gets the refund if they apply for it.
So basically it's more £££ for the DVLA because I wonder how many sellers will either not know about their chance to get the refund (e.g. first time sellers), or how many won't be arsed because it's only a few quid to get back.
Total joke if you ask me.
And no wonder there are more untaxed vehicles now. I wonder how many sellers are still saying it's taxed, and how many buyers are buying under the impression of it being taxed... Personally I had no idea about this new tax malarkey until I got my new bike and the new V5 came in the post with a little extra information slip dumped in the envelope, which I could have just as easily binned without thinking twice... |

If a vehicle is known and caught as being untaxed. What's stopping the fines?
Sounds like more vehicles are being driven illegally, not only due to tax. Fiddled the V5 details, no insurance, MOT etc. I'm not convinced removing the tax disc has encourage more legal, insured motorists to ignore tax.
More likely that more of our continental cousins are driving and taxing cars Romanian style. |
On other topics I'm willing to overlook our differences in opinion because what you say isn't necessarily wrong, even if you do pepper your opinions with needless swipes regarding yoghurt weavers and the likes.
However the statement above is utterly absurd. In less than a year the amount of untaxed cars has more than doubled, and it perfectly coincides with the introduction of a sneaky and little-publicised new tax rule which many average citizens will no-doubt fall foul of quite innocently... yet your first thought is to blame the two hundred thousand untaxed vehicles on... our 'continental cousins'...??? |
OK, let's put this another way.
Of the twice as many cars caught as untaxed. How many fines are for cars which are otherwise legal, making the fines enforceable?
So, the lack of a paper disc has caused twice as many people to "forget" to tax their cars, even with a postal reminder? How do they remember an MOT without one?
Over a third of all uninsured vehicles in the UK are caught in London. Why do you think that is? What is it about London which causes this? The second highest place is West Yorkshire. What demographic is higher in that area which might cause this?
Ever watched those TV programs following Yorkshire traffic cops? What ethnicity are most of the suspects caught driving illegally, local? Nah. ____________________ TZR250 2MA road, TZR250 1KT road, TZR250 2MA race, TDR250, YZF-750R Boost colours.

Without fail if they decide to stun you with with Non Payment of Road Tax.
They will NOT issue any more taxes for that vehicle Until the missing duty is paid and the fine.
There are many loops to thwart the Artful.
The only way to avoid it is to be of the Romany persuasion and take a stance of Non-Payment for anything.
Except Daggs, Ponies and Caravans.
If DVLA were in charge of Benefits we may see a change in the cost effectiveness of that shambles of democracy.
If you can get it right the Gov.co.org will pay for Sky in every room to drive your plasma TVs and you get rent and heating for free. Only drawback is having to turn up at an 'interview' now and then. ____________________ Disclaimer: The comments above may be predicted text and not necessarily the opinion of MCN. |

| mpd72 wrote: | Ah, I always presumed the no tax fines were just fines without court appearances. |
Nope, a "fine" means specifically something handed out by a court. The court can then chase up non-payments including sending out (actual) court bailiffs to steal your possessions.
Despite the DVLA's rabid beliefs, they have no power to "fine".
They can withhold selling further VED until you've paid any outstanding VED. That does then allow them to clamp or steal the vehicle if they can get at it, as they can do with any untaxed vehicle.
They can and will send blackmail demands for some amount of money in addition to the outstanding VED, "or else".
The "or else" is that they can prosecute you for the offences of keeping and/or using an unlicensed vehicle. They're super-gay for Paddy and keep losing his SORN notices and then prosecuting him. However if they win they don't get the money, so they'd rather take a bribe at the courtroom door.
They can (by which I just mean that they will) sell off the blackmail "debt" to collections goons, which you can laugh off or fret about as you prefer.
However neither they not any subcontracted goons can do anything to directly enforce collection of the outstanding VED or blackmail money. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
