Someone I know got this amount in early-inheritance after their father sold the family business.

What would BCF do? buy a student house? stocks and shares? hookers and blow?

Obviously I told them to give it to me and i'd sort it out for them, i'm still waiting for their reply.

I bought land, then built houses on them.

I also used some of it as start up capital for an outsourcing company I opened up.

But UK rent market is going to get tightened up considerably. Clause 24 of the finance act means being a landlord is going to be tougher. As the expenses claimable are going to be reduced (10% W&T allowance is being removed from April) mortgage interest will be limited to 20% as well. The new stamp duty changes announced yesterday are also going to bite.

Quite simply what happened is that the government realised they were broke and landlords are a very easy target (Wales requires licensing of landlords). Landlords were also outnumbered by people renting so there were more votes in that.

Split the money into different investments.

Invest in some shares in a strong & expanding business in a strong expanding industry.

easyJet and Ryanair would be good ones. Both companies have big aircraft orders so will be expanding massively over the next 5-10 years. RYR has massive revenue increases and consistently profitable, EZY has posted 5 consecutive years of record profits.

(Only suggest those two as I know the airline industry better than other industries. I'm sure there are many strong companies in many industries worth investing in)

Property is always a good one... if you can get a mortgage, and able to do a lot of stuff yourself, it may be worth getting either a fixer-upper to sell on, or renting out to pay off the mortgage.

Student houses seem to be poorer-than-average and more expensive than average... I lived in a 4-bed semi-detached with garage & gardens, privately rented for £500 pcm... whereas as a student I was living in a smaller terraced house, and between 4 of us the landlord was getting over £1k a month. If you can get a property in a convenient area its definitely worth targeting students.

Bitcoin.

Alternatively, advice from Coutts 10 years ago for investing £300k was to split it equally and buy three distribution bonds.

Any land or property anywhere in London. Ignore any laws, they only apply to provincials.

I'd buy my retirement flat somewhere near (but not too near) the coast.

Then rent it out to old people for 30 years. Once too knackered to mow a bit of lawn, sell my house (without paying capital gains), then move into retirement flat.

Haha, just kidding. Coke & hoes.

With that amount, I'd probably "invest" it in life. Give up the job, rent my house out and go off travelling forever.

190k you say, well it depends. Do they want to enjoy the money yet stay at least near what they've invested OR they just want the profit of an investment?

I'd put it in the bank for now, the interest on such amount of money will certainly be not negligible. Then I'd wait for when the prices of real estate and/or any other desired commodity that does not degrade (that is important) is low and buy that.

But as it wouldn't be just pocket money for me, I'd build a house. Mortgage free house is always better than wasting the money on holidays and expensive stuff you do not actually need. They also say, the top of the range Swiss made watches are a good investment, but I wouldn't go there, as there is a lot that can go wrong, if you're not an expert at watches.

I'd pay off my mortgage. It would be a great return on 'investment' just on the interest saved and no risk.

Live comfortably. That's all I'd do. I'm not on this planet to make money and be rolling in cash. I'm here to just have a good time and not push myself too hard. I'd buy a cheapish house around the Gainsborough or Lincoln area, sell my other properties and go live there.

Note the "at the time". Can you recall the last time an "investment portfolio" has doubled in value in two years?

Also, if your annual disposable income is half the price of a house then you're in the 1% of the 1%.

You saw it in your Failbook feed because someone is paying to promote it in order to sell their fantasy book about fantasy scenarios. Fish fingers to 4-thou.

Paying off the mortgage is a safe investment. You 'could' invest the money somewhere else and 'might' make more than your interest payments but you 'might' also lose it all.

You could write a similar article but replace 'pay off mortgage' with 'put money in ISA'. You could do the same for any investment that makes more money than another investment.

Also there is nothing to stop him from remortgaging, it's not like the money is lost forever.

Also, it's an instant return. You might well make more from an investment portfolio but then you might not live to see a return on it.

You could always do that offsetting thing where if you keep it in the bank it is as if you've paid it off.

Therefore getting the best of both worlds. You dramatically decrease your payments. Yet at the same time if you need money fast for something or some sort of investment you can take it out again.
