The Dreaded 400cc Staged Access Licence

Hi all,
Been a fairly regular biker on my CBT now for two years but as friends move further away, I realise that I'm not going to be getting a car and really want to do the 400cc test (As I'm only 19, and can't do the full test till I'm 21).

A few questions -
1. How difficult will the practical really be?
2. A basic overview of the two practical parts?
3. I'll also be inheriting a Honda CB400 SF, early to mid 90's model... On the small chance that I pass (as I'm not looking to do the test until at least April), is it a good 400cc bike?

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated, I have all the correct riding gear and stuff, I just need the advice on the licence and the bike.

Just so you know, there is no 400cc licence ...

It's a restricted licence.

If you want to find out whether the tests are hard, go and do them on your current bike, two tests, can be done in one day if you so wish. Obviously you'll need your theory test completed.

Go into the New Bikers section. Many posts describing the Mods 1 and 2 in there.

1. its really not that difficult.
2. youtube it. there are loads of vids taking you through mock mod1 and 2 tests
3. any bike is better than no bike.

1. It's fine, if you've been riding for two years you should be good enough to pass. Get your theory done then go ahead and book A1 module 1 on your own 125. It only costs £15.50 and you won't get better practice than actually doing it. Doing it on a bigger bike to get A2 will be no harder and perhaps easier depending on the bike. The road ride is just a road ride, don't sweat it.

3. The CB400 SF claims 38kw, above the 35kW limit for an A2 license. You can get it restricted down to 35kW. eBay can provide parts and a TOTES AFISSUL CERTIFUKT.

In practice, what's likely to matter is having a convincing looking piece of paper saying "is 35kW honest". A piece of paper doesn't cost £60.

Are you planning on going via a training school or being a geezer and doing it on your own bike?
