Thoughts?

I have my theory in a few weeks and hopefully my mod 1 and mod 2 will follow pretty quickly

I have some money burning a hole in my pocket, is it wise to buy a bike before your test?

I am conscious that bikes will start going back up in price after xmas etc

You won't know what bike suits you until you get some idea of riding a 'standard' 600.
You may want more or less power or a different style so I'd wait until you at least cock your leg over a training school bike.

Nope because how are you going to know what you want, test ride it, get it home, or insure it? It'll be sitting around depreciating and tempting you to just give it a rev, now go on, just to the end of the road and back, now just round the block, ah, come on, down the shops, what's the worst that could happe-

Prices don't ramp up until spring, you've got plenty of time.

Also from a psychological point of view having a bike ready to go it pus more pressure on you when it comes to the tests & so you're more likely to fail them, especially your mod 2.

Unless you see a really good deal I wouldn't bother. If you fail it'll end up sitting around in the cold by the time you pass it could need a bit of work to get going.

If you have the money spare and you know that bikes are for you and you see a good deal then why not.

I bought the bike prior to my test (got few now in fact - you'll find plenty of bargains any time of the year, don't worry), failed it and there's nothing more frustrating than a nice bike sitting outside, rusting away and battery going flat due to no use... Yet, it was a good deal, but I was a tat too sure I guess - in my case my Mod2 day was last day of the theory being valid, so need to start all over, it's my fault as I was going to re-do the theory after passing Mod1... Good luck with your test, whether you buy a bike or you don't - don't let it pressurise you, take it easy, go and pass the bloody thing, then enjoy. My theory's next week, Mod1 will follow shortly after. You might as well get yourself a 125 and use it to get used to bikes, if you'd buy one now, it'll be next to nothing, when you sell it around spring you'll probably make something on it to go towards new big bike.

You'll be riding soon enough, and there will be PLENTY of bikes out there when you are ready

In the meantime there is nothing wrong with getting yôur leg over a few machines at the dealers and finding gear you like if you've not already got it

As Roger said and we have had a few students that have their bikes bought already and waiting for their pass. The pressure they put on themselves to pass is counter productive. One has still not been able to pass mod 1 all for silly reasons. He's done 3 so far.

What you should do is spend the next few weeks (once you pass) going round all the local dealers and test riding as many bikes as possible until you find what you want.

That's what I'm gonna do if/when i pass mine. I know what I "think" I want, but I'm sure as hell gonna check out the competition.

It pains me a bit to admit it, because I tend to agree with what others have said, but I did actually buy a big bike before I got the full monty.

It was a P reg cb500 w/ 8k on it - so kind of almost mint really. £1.5k and relatively local. I'd been looking for a little while, and thought I'd better get it because good ones didn't seem to come up much on eBay.

In mitigation I'd done about 3k miles on a 125 at this point, and had got the bug pretty bad. Only death or injury was going to prevent me getting a full license. Plus, I reasoned, even if the worst happened, I wasn't going to lose much on the 500.

As for prices going up - I dunno, I don't see that much in the way of seasonal fluctuations on the bikes I look at. Then again, I'm not relishing the prospect of trying to flog a w650 any time before next June. : - /

RE pressure hanging over you of having a bike in the garage but no legal means of using it - I personally didn't feel that. Still took me two throws to get mod 2, mind.
