Hey guys, so I'm new to this site but hopefully someone can give me some advise.
I've got a piaggio vespa lx 50 2 stroke, it was serviced about 2 months ago.
But today on my ride to work my friend pointed out it really smelt of petrol when I rode past her!
The smell isn't there when it's parked, there is no leaking.
Is it something I should worry about?

I'm not sure if I've just got used to the smell because I only caught a little bit of it when I started up to leave work.

Are you sure it's not just your friend not realising that 2 strokes smell a bit?

My dad said obviously they smell abit,
But I ride past her every morning and she said it's never smelt like that before.
Just wanted some other people's advise.

I've no ide about scooters but Is it an auto-choke? If you'd just started the engine on a cold day then it would be a little rich until it warmed up.

no, I already said it doesn't smell when parked. Only once going.
Maybe it is because it's getting colder.
I've never noticed it before.

When I got home from work, I was on the floor smelling around and didn't smell petrol at all.
I'm going to go with maybe it's where I go to work at 5 in the morning so it's way cold and is just burning off old stuff.

Could be that.

Would your friend prefer strawberry?

If you can't see/smell anything when you stop with the engine RUNNING (and I can't stress that enough) or your fuel consumption hasn't suddenly rocketed, I wouldn't worry too much.

It's quite amazing what you can smell from quite a distance away so it might not have even been your bike she smelled, but I would hazard a guess it was the 2 stroke.

it's the small of hash when filtering up to the lights that worries me, there's not a week goes by without some car or other reeking of it

Most probably just the horrible smell of 2 strokes, get stuck behind about 40 Vespas on a 125. Trust me the smell isn't good.

Did you change brand of premix recently? Different petrol? Change in weather as suggested above.

My 4-stroke smells more of unburnt fuel and throws in the odd sputter and exhaust pop if i have a slightly fouled plug or a weak spark. ACF50/WD40 or other oily stuff on exhaust stinks more though.

To one of the kids it always smells 'of bike' to the other it is only detectable when everything else is too loud/smelly/bright.

Of course there was the stuck float moment where the bike spewed a load of fuel out the carb overflow.
