Are you over the floody side of the country, or the other bit?

I have visions of you floating away down a paddock with your arm still lodged inside a cow's bum.

Hope all is warm and dry with la famiglia Stinkers?
No footrot, I hope! xx

Awww. nice to be thought of. Embarassed

Mrs stikwheel commented how lucky we are not to be flooded.

I pointed out luck had nothing to do with it. I quite deliberately bought a house up on a hill and away from any watercourses. Trading off the risk of windmills against the risk of flooding.

Quite a spectacular amount of rain came down though, even for the Lake District. I'll admit I chucked my drysuit, bouyancy aid and throwrope in the back of the van at the weekend, just in case.

I'm rather hoping we now get some joined-up thinking about upstream flood mitigation. Such as halving the numbers of sheep on the fells and planting some trees so there's soil and vegetation to slow down the water getting into the drainage basins. I'm sure they won't though, it was shouted down by ramblers last time it was proposed.

They're currently still all bleating on about beefing up flood defences when the problem is rivers spiking to 6+ metres above their normal levels. They need to flatten out the spikes by slowing down the water, not build higher walls.

I won't hold my breath.

Here's what I mean by spikes. This is the environment agency level gauge for the area of Carlisle worst affected.

The top black line is the level in the 2005 floods. The next one down is the level in 2011. As you can see, it wouldn't take much flattening to have made this not a flood.

The Keswick gauge on the River Greta flat-topped which means the level went over the top of the gauge.

By now one would/could assume the Engineers had a Scooby about the way water finds it's level.

Some fecker dropped the ball on this.

You're not wrong. They made a window thing to trap even more water upstream of the bridge with the fixed arch under it. It came over the top of them.

The REALLY stupid thing is they could have just knocked down a wall on the opposite side of the road which would have let the water get back into the river downstream of the bridge. Making around 50 yards of road flood instead of it heading off up the road looking for somewhere to go.

A clear case of trying to stop it coming in when they should have been letting it out instead.

The town 'planners' want to have a long look at the street naming regime too when they are at it.

Comprising one of the cheapest sit-down hot lunches in the lakes complete with free parking and an apparently endless supply of doodling paper and (really quite expensive) pencils supplied at the table.

Lie about having a local address (have it to hand, complete with postcode) and qualify for a further discount.

Go non-Nazi pencils. Do you want the filthy Germans (Staedtler) to have the upper hand?

But I like Staedtler pencils ...

Shifty

I like those red and black ones; the wood is soft. You can leave your teethmarks all the way down the shaft.

Oh that must be why I am not right in the head, then.

Cos I gnawed all my pencils* as a kid, and most of them were Staedtlers. I especially liked biting of the black bit at the top and then (as mentioned) leaving teeth marks all over. Stopped me (momentarily) from biting my nails Laughing

I must have been a hamster in another life. I just have to always be gnawing things. Rolling Eyes

*and pens, biros, fountain pens, lids off coloured felt-tips - in fact, the only thing I didn't gnaw was chalk. Weird child!

I have to own up to enjoying chipping the painted end off in a complete sort of dome.

I never swallowed though. Very Happy
