YZF600R or CBR600F?

Seeing as I have my theory test on Monday (14th feb) I've been giving a thought as to what bike I want to get when my my DAS is done. So far I have come up with 2 bikes:

YZF600R Thundercat
CBR600F

Basically this bike will be for long trips so faired will be quite prefered, commuting back and forth from work (not many traffic jams) and also a bit of fun for the weekend

What I would like to know is what are these bikes like? reliability? comfort? expense of servicing, etc? Obviously I will test ride them before I buy them to see which feels better, but just need to get a ruff idea.

Also I see there is a CBR600F and a CBR600F sport, whats the diffrence between them apart from the seating if there is anything?

CBR 600F sport would be the best choice out of those as it is sports tourer, a great alround bike. Only problem is insurance will be a killer.

I'm not too bothered about insurance at the mo, I've expected to pay a fair bit and I'm saving extra to make sure.

Even then, the Thundercat is an excellent bike.

definatly the cbr600f my brother has got one and it is well good. plus when yoou buy a honda you get the build quality.cbr600f is the one, by far!!!!!!!!!!

I do believe there were some more differences between the 600f and the 600f sport.

If I'm thinking of the right one here, the sport was 01-02 - 03/04 ish and had fuel injection, and chassis/handling mods to make it more sporty.

I believe Fazed has the sport version - the one with sports rear plastics, etc. Could ask him a few questions...

Cbr600f will do you fine. Great all rounder from what I’ve heard, and considerably cheaper than the sport. Comfort and a very capable sports bike in one package.

I got a CBR600F and i love it.

Reliable as you like and not too frisky to start with yet remains sporty.

The 'sport' version has a seperate rider-pillion seat, slightly more forward rider position (sat on one next to my CBR). Its a bit sportier but in reality the 600F is sporty enough for almost all purposes, and can chew up alot of miles and remain comfy on it.

Tip - Double Bubble Screen for the CBR is a well worth it addition, keeps the wind off you alot more effectivly than the regular screen.

My 1999 CBR is 'CBR600 F' on my ownership papers. And the stickers below the pillion seat both are '600 F'. I shopped around quite alot and i know their a make.

Your right there are a whole series of 'F's (FX, F1-5, FI etc) but i think the CBR600F is a model itself, end of 1999 beginning of 2000 i believe.

If you want a CBR find an old copy of RiDE, about 3 moths ago they did a 24 page 'buying a used CBR guide'. Has each model from each year in it (including a black/yellow CBR600F identical to mine but inverted coloursheme)

There's always been an 'F', though it might not always have been painted on the side of it.

Laura's '87 bike is an F-H, Kev's old steely was an F-M (I think).

I'm presuming that we're discussing the F4 series ally frame CBRs, but there's no equivalent year Thundercat so it crosses my mind that we could be talking about a steely.

I think I'll be looking at getting a CBR600F 2000 onwards as it has the better looking headlights I saw a silver one today parked up down at Bognor Regis and I must say it does look quite good

Got a cbr600f at the mo definately a good choice (jus came of a 125) thinking of buying one be sure to get one after 1998 honda brought in the new aluminium frame ! If u got the money get a 2001 model (year ive got) brought in the new pgm-f1 fuel injection system off of the blade goes shit fast!

LOL I was about to say the CBR must be one of the most owned bikes! but the reply's kind of prove that.
If you have decided on a CBR already I still must advice you at least give the thundercat a shot!

Remeber the cat's engine was dubbed one of the best 600 engines!

I can't comment on the CBR's as I have'nt been on one but there are lot's of comments for you to read above so I'll fill in the space for the cat.

Power wise it's only 5BHP down from the R6 (in the same year) making it a very quick bike it's got great mid range power and does'nt peak untill just before it's red line 13,200 RPM.
I'd say for longer trips and run around trips the thundercat will win this hands down as it's alittle more upright (not much) possition will allow for more comfort and less bad backs. I can stay on the bike for 3+ hours and not have any back aches etc.
Build is good and well finished with no un covered parts you can sometimes find on Honda's ( I.E around the clocks and just below the handle bars).
On the road well the bike can certainly out perform what I am capaple of doing and is very capable of keeping up with most other 600's in it's class. It has fully adjustable suspension ( Spring preload, compression, rebound) both front and back so handling can be made comfy for day to day then tune it up for more fun. Brakes well amazing comes to mind but seeing's how they sport same front brakes as the first edition R1 you can't go wrong. Weight balance is brilliant making it a very easy bike to manuover around at slow speed.

Reliability can't complain at all my bike has not gone wrong yet and has a 6000 miles service interval with a 12,000 miles bearing check and a 16,000 mile valve clearence check.
Fuel well I just got a nice 180 Miles from my tank today before the light came on so thats easily 200 Miles and they were by no means easy miles.
Parts - oil filters £10 spark plugs £5.99 each air filter not sure as you can clean them (as I have).
Engine easy to work on and lots of room to get to parts. Not much under seat room though.
Pillion passenger- just about the best pillion seat on offer really very comfortable ride.
Looks really nice I'd say........lol but all sports 600 are!

Things to look out for: Bikes that have had a hard life as the gear boxes if thrashed can become difficult changing from first to second.

Prices I picked my 2000 bike up for £3000 it is immaculate condition and had 7000 miles on the clock.


The Cat is always the underated bike due to the CBR being a more popular brand and bike. If it's bike for everything I'd say the thundercat is your best option.
