I need some suggestions for a new bike.

I've got a Honda CB1000R at the moment - nice bike but I dont like the wind blast at speed.

I want something which gives me some wind protection, handles well, and which isnt too much of a lean forward I get shoulder ache on sports bikes (I guess its age being 54 Sad ) Dont really want to loose too much performance so probably not much smaller than 1000cc.
I dont do many miles a year about 4000 just weekends when its warmish and dry.

Any suggestions? Starting too loose the enjoyment of riding the Honda.

FZ1, SV1000 or a VFR 800, in that order. Thumbs Up

Thanks not sure the FZ1 would be that much difference to my CB1000R?

Hadnt thought of the SV1000 not really a fan of twins but may be worth a look.

I did think about the VFR800 but a bit worried I'd find it a lot slower and less powerful.

FZ1 is very different the CB. It's rather upright, with wide flat bars. Lots of wind protection too.

I do 100 miles a week with pillion and I get no body ache at all.

Budget?

How much speed are we talking, and are you after roll on torque or top end?

What is it about the Honda that's taking the shine off? If it's the wind blast, a screen would be cheaper than swapping bikes.

Are you just hankering after something different? Perfectly valid reason. Try a triple? Tiger 1050?

May sound stupid, but have you tried a screen? They do help more than you may think.

If you have tried a screen, the first few bikes that spring to mind...

-Yamaha FZ1S
-Kawasaki Z1000SX
-Suzuki GSX1000F
-Ducati Multistrada 1200
-Suzuki TL1000S

Or you could always buy a supersport 1000 and ruin it with some Renthals.

Have a go on a CBF1000 if you can. It’s not as classy as some of the bikes mentioned above and it’s missing the sharp handling and stonking top end of the blade, but… it’s definitely better than the sum of its parts.

I came to the CBF from four years on a CBR954RR (via a couple of other bikes) and the bloke I bought the blade from was moving to a CBF1000. And they sell very well in Germany and we all know how sensible they are…

It’s upright with adjustable seat and handlebars. Although Honda lopped the top end off the motor and 100bhp from a litre seems meagre in this day and age, the midrange is just a thing of beauty. It doesn’t really need gears. Well maybe 1st to pull away then one more gear for everything from trickle to warp speed.

You can overwhelm the handling if you stuff it into bumpy corners too fast and it can get a bit top heavy with a top box full of laptops, but other than that it’s predictable, familiar Honda. It just works. Except the charging system. It’s a Honda so those always break at least once.

So castrated engine + heavy tubular steel frame + ugly bodywork = the bike I’ve loved the most.

I’m probably retiring mine after the winter and looking around for a suitable replacement. I tested the Tracer which was punchy, but I wasn’t keen on the poor wind protection or what felt like very wide bars. I want to find out a bit more about the VFR800X Crossrunner next.

To reduce the lean over, have you ever thought of the bar risers? I mean, higher the bars are, more upright sitting position you get. More upright you sit, less strength is required to ride. ANY motorcycle can be fitted with those, look at moto gymkhana, those people do that on liter superbikes, 1300-1400cc hypertourers etc, sitting completely upright.

As you are 54 years old, I'm not gonna give you the speech about how you should sit on a motorcycle and that if you had proper seating position on the motorcycle you wouldn't even need your shoulder muscles, nor your wrists strength to ride your motorcycle. Smile

Got a mate with an FZ1 and he reckons he gets battered by the wind on that at anything above 70mph. He's about 5' 7 think he's got a standard screen. Have you got a taller screen on yours?

Looking to spend about £6,500 max (thats with selling the Honda)

Not talking crazy speeds like to be able to cruise at 80ish in comfort

Its the wind blast which I dont like on the Honda not sure a screen will be enough

Think I probably need a change of bikes

Standard screen on mine. I'm 5'6. Haven't got any complaints about the wind blast tbh, even at Santa Pod doing 127mph at the far end.

Not to dissuade you from buying a new bike, but you would probably be surprised by how much difference changing a screen can make.

However I don't know how easy it would be to find a screen that actually looks good on that bike Very Happy

You have a mate with a FZ1?!?!?! Ask for a small ride on it, then you can gauge if you like them or not, wind blast shouldn't be too bad with the mini fairing/screen.

Boiling it all down, you need either a faired motorbike with an upright riding position, or a naked bike with an effective screen?

You have a 1000cc Honda with what 150bhp? and you want to keep the same performance roughly?

Id be looking at power and weight figures more than engine capacity or types of engine configuration. Saying I don't like triples or Twins etc isnt really much help to you if you don't ride a bike that's got the power/weight and riding position your after?

I don't know how well the CB1000R handles? Is it effectively a naked Fireblade with re-tuning and re-styling?

If so then you really need to look at similar bikes with upright riding positions, but more fairing I would say.

If keeping the handling of the CB1000R is not as important, you could always go for a more powerful and faster sports tourer that would have a reasonable riding position, a decent size fairing and screen and a bigger engine to power it all quickly.

Essentially do you want something like?

Fast sports tourer (CBR1100XX for example)?

A less sporty fast tourer with more upright riding position and luggage capacity (GTR1400 for example)?

An in between street bike with some small fairing, but maybe not the handling of a CB1000R or sportsbike? (Z1000SX, Yamaha Tracer for example)

Or a balls out naked bike, with pure sportsbike handling and a small screen which is probably closer to what you have in the Honda?
(BMW S1000X or Aprilia RSV1000 V4 for example)?

123 hp, 74 foot-pounds.

Rides it at 80 so I'd be looking at the torque, not the power.

In that case Id be more interested in grunt and comfort than Handling.

So if one extreme is the Aprilia RSV4 Tuono, then the other end of the scale would be a ZRX1200S.

The Kawasaki end would be where I'm most happy too, as Handling on a road bike within 80% of road riding is not that important to me these days.

At risk of sounding a bit the Ghey, for todays congested, boring and dull roads you want style, looks, noise and grunt, much more than anodised high and low speed compression adjusters, and high rear sets and paper thin bodywork because WSB. Laughing
