I come to you now to come out in the open and say that I sexually identify as an A-10 Thunderbolt II.

Centuries, more like. This person is a hideous example of the species: the way he treats his ex-wife and children online (thanks to the restraining order they took out against him) is appalling. He has a history of threatened violence and attention-whoring. He even made a huge song-and-dance suicide threat at one of his daughter's wedding, because (IIRC) she wouldn't let it be centred on him and his drama-flavoured needs.

Short answer, he's a deviant fetishist who is riding on the coattails of a movement to recognise people who legitimately suffer with dysphoria.

Personally, I reckon that people like this are why the concept of 'safe spaces' are ultimately toxic as all hell. If you need a sheltered environment to be able to express a concept, then either you or the concept itself is unfit to be expressed. There's a difference between floating an idea past a few trusted people, and needing to occupy a psychological echo chamber that has specially rounded-off edges and corners. Anything that's destined to survive needs to be able to stand up to scrutiny and testing.
