MOD 2 Test retake

Hey all,

I failed my mod 2 on monday due to remaining in a dedicated left lane and moving over to late. so i need to retake my mod 2, my question is is it known to do the mod 2 on my own bike? i can get L plates on it and get it down to the test center ever in a van or me as a pillion. it would cost me £225 to retake with the people i did the course with.

You can do it with your own bike but you will need insurance.

i can get insurance thats not a problem i will also get L plates and a high vis for it too. but do they look at you differently if you come in alone?

I do not know, as an instructor I always go down with students. I do not see why not though. You are a candidate, as long as you do not (get caught) ride the bike down there yourself and back should you fail there is nothing to say you must be with a school.

I cannot figure out why your school is charging so much, the test fee is £75. Even our fee is £150 for bike, escort to and from test and instructor hire.

Yes, you need L plates. You do not strictly need hi-vis (that's required to validate your provisionaL entitlement when doing training, not while under test) but I agree that you're right to wear it.

Of course they will, they're human beings. Pass the Attitude Test, be ostentatious in demonstrating how you got it there without riding it yourself, have your paperwork to hand, including a certificate of insurance - it's not needed, but have it anyway.

Still wondering how you got insurance. It's a genuine question, we're always on the look out for insurers that will cover people on big bikes on their provisionaL entitlement.

When I insured my Fazer on a provisional licence to take my test, I just used the online quote form and insured it with Bennetts. I clearly put that I only had a provisional licence and the policy document came through with that on it. There was probably some small print to say that I shouldn't ride it but it's all done now Thumbs Up

When I took the test(s), they didn't want to see the insurance document anyway, they just wanted me to sign to say it was insured.

Personally, I felt the examiner was a bit shitty about me using my own bike, but it will be a great feeling when you pass. You now know what the Mod 2 test involves so will be more aware of what is expected.

to be honest it was a very stupid mistake, and i was very annoyed with myself.

as for insurance its not illegal to insure a bigger bike on a provisional because you are allowed to ride with supervision of a qualified instructor.

thanks for your experience i thought they would look at me differently but oh well i got a bike there legally thats all that matters Smile

Of course it's not, it's just that most insurers don't seem to want to know. Bikesure have an underwriter that will cover you, apparently Bennetts do as well, although I'd not be entirely convinced that a phone drone would even understand the question.

We've seen a few folk say that they've had eyebrows raised when they turn up without an instructor. But sod 'em, it's perfectly legal and you can still pass. Plenty of us did under the old 125 system.

What they're probably sniffy about is that they're understaffed and overworked and don't want you turning up unprepared and failing. The DfT is currently "consulting" (read: telling us what they've already decided) about introducing a "failure fee" for tests to discourage folk just having a go.

Stuff 'em though, just do a good ride and you're golden.
