As I upgraded my mitx system recently I decided to have a go on Fifa 16 tonight , first time ive actually put the new GPU to work
R9 280 3gb

Whilst fouling messi the PC went BANG and smelt of smoke.
immediately disconnected
Pulled machine apart the psu was redderz
BTW it's shit PSU yes I know buy cheap buy twice but I thought I could get away with it (don't even ask what power and make hahahaha BTW CIT 450w gold) FML

Pulled PSU out quick look at mobo ,GPU no black on the mobo to indicate it being fried.

Tried paper clip test on PSU fans failed to spin so some fault on PSU,
I was still getting accessory power to the PC I.e speakers lighting up (USB power) but wouldn't start also.

Buying a half decent psu tomorrow evga 600w modular ,

System is brand new i3 4700 ,8gb ddr3,500gb HDD,r9 280,h87 mitx mobo

What's chances I've fucked up my system ......

CANSA is gonna rape me.....
I hold my head in shame

FML

TL:DR

Don't cheap out on a PSU

Fair to middling. It requires that Magic Smoke to work. Once the Magic Smoke escapes, it's almost impossible to get it back in. Did you manage to collect any of it in a jar?

I googled around and the card requires at least 500w PSU (750w for the dual version). I think the PC is alright, the PSU cooking itself shouldn't harm a thing. Well, all the wiring in the PSU will be melted, I suppose. Thumbs Up

Cheap PSU that's underpowered at the same time, is a safety hazard. Be glad you did not burn your house down. Razz

You're a dick.

I coughed for a 750w semi-modular OCZ psu over 4rs ago and it's still going.

However, I wouldn't buy OCZ now because they went bankrupt and were bought out by Toshiba.

I would buy this Corsair 850w semi-modular gold rated efficiency psu

I've always bought cheap PSU's, the last one was about 5 years old and I thought there was a problem with it as the PC kept restarting (turns out it was a dodgy reset button), and that was a CiT 750w

I always buy a much higher wattage than I need though

If it was just overloaded it would cut out. Sounds more like crap components failed within the rated specs, maybe faulty parts or something.

Make sure that when you do buy a higher wattage PSU you get one with a decent efficiency rating, that's the most important thing. Couple hundred watts over what your rig is using should be fine. Having said that, don't go too crazy with the wattage or you'll be drawing the amount your PC needs plus the PSU's efficiency margin ontop (more unnecessary power usage if you have a higher watt PSU). It's a good idea to give yourself headroom but not too much headroom unless you're looking to slap a second gfx card in there.

Also calculate your total wattage here https://powersupplycalculator.net/

Your problem's not the cheap PSU, it's the crappy power mad AMD graphics card. Buy Nvidia instead, you know it makes sense Twisted Evil

Pretty much seconding Cansa's comment, get a proper quality PSU from a real brand. Cheap chinese multi-rail PSUs are absolutely useless the moment you put anything more demanding than a 750TI on them regardless of the wattage they claim.

Last time I had a PSU go bang and smoke was in 1996 and it was DOA, set it all up, turned it on and BOOM. £2,000 Daewoo PC Sad

Had a couple PSU's die on me since then but not explode, just stopped working and yes, they were cheap before I realised getting a good PSU was the key.

Coolermaster Silent Pro 1000w here still going strong after 4 years.

I think modern systems have safety mechanisms to prevent that shit now

You get what you pay for
