....would you like to live?

We're in a position to move and are open to suggestions for which area of the UK is a nice place to live. I've a sister near Richmond, N Yorks, and it would be nice to move up to that area, but we also like the Dorset area, although you get a lot more house for your money oop norf.

I'd need to find work in the area, but I'm not in a rush - if I find a job first I'll get a bedsit (or live in a caravan) during the week whilst looking for the house.

So, if you found yourself in the position of being able to up sticks and move anywhere in the UK, where would you go, and why?

^^^I agree but they may have a buffer to see them through.

If you're not fussed why not lodge/rent/doss/B&B in a few locations to get a better idea. G moved to Keighley in yorkshire and didn't like it. chickenstrip moved to the floating nest of Carlisle and MadCowWoman(MCW) moved into Scotland and is liking it last I heard.

The Suntan Sids are itching to leave for warmer climes as did mentalboy and mattsprattuk...but I'm happy with losing riff-raff. Razz

My neck of the North is pretty good for everything but not excellent in anything.

Places I don't like for whatever reason; Merseyside, Most if not all of Manchester's suburbs. Sheffield, Huddersfield. Stockport and surrounding suburbs. Pretty much everything that surrounds my house.
I didn't like Singapore or Blackpool. Southport makes me feel dead.

I love my duvet.

If I didn't live where I do (God's own country) I would move to Northumberland. Warkworth or Alnwick would do me quite nicely... There is something special about a market town, particularly one as far away from London as possible...

Try Buxton. I know of a really nice 4 bed house coming up for sale in the new year. Slap bang in the Peak District. Handy for the town, man cave/cellar, supermarket on doorstep, rural views and free entertainment in winter watching BMWs and Audis trying to get up our hill.

Handy for commuting to Manchester and Stockport.

Discount for BCF buyer.

And....by the way HT, I know you weren't including us in your riff raff epithet.....were you Question

That's on the list, was stopped off in Amble a couple of months ago - lovely area.

I could do Buxton as well... Wherever you go though, don't live in the valley bottom. This was my village last night... Thankfully the walls held.

Probably on the edge of a satellite town to Birmingham or Manchester. It's close enough to get the perks of airports and work (if you need it) and infrastructure. Yet travel a few miles in the opposite direction and you're in empty countryside.

Depends what you want from life really. Richmond is a wee bit in the sticks for me.

Personally, I'm in Leeds now and it's great. I've long had serious thoughts about shifting over to Glasgow once I've finished this uni thing. I like Scotland, and Glasgow has that city feel while being damn close to the best spots of scenery this country has to offer (in my opinion).

If my potential business ideas work out, I'd like to move somewhere in the regions of ~40 miles from Edinburgh. Far enough out to feel distant, close enough for a city to be within easy reach. I'm testing said business idea on a smaller scale first, to see if I can at least break even on the minor outlay I've made initially. If it works, then it becomes a possibility.

Sandown. Isle of Wight.

Quiet and cheap. Beaches everywhere and probably 4 policemen patrolling the 1 island.

I know f-all about anything about up North, but in my small travels through my life, I have always found the County of Durham to be nice.
I have always found North of Perth in Scottyland to be a nice place to be.

The South coast can be very nice and I would love to live somewhere on the South West coast (Cornwall way), but It gets horrible in the summer when all us bloody tourists come and spoil it!

Meh! I`ll stay here in Suffolk and just travel to other places.... that way I get to go home, once I`ve upset the natives wherever I am Wink

I would love to live back in Devon again, somewhere on or very close to the moors. Its full of tourists and ice cream vans in the summer though which is a huge bummer. But rolling countryside is my cup of tea and its absolutely glorious when the heather turns purple....

I miss living there.

My partner and I are currently in Birmingham, and will be until she qualifies as an RVN. Once that is done, we've bought a 17 century stone cottage in the Scottish borders between Berwick and Edinburgh. Got a fair bit of work to do on the place in the next couple of years but we love the area, very much looking forward to relocating permanently.

I moved down to Dorset a year or so ago and if I stay in the UK I doubt i'll leave here to be honest.

Can't really fault it except the house/rent prices are reasonably steep in a lot of areas (especially compared to the north as you mentioned).

A lot of stuff is little more than 2 hours away - Easy access to London. Southampton/Portsmouth are nearby if you need to goto 'cities' for whatever reason.

Then you have lots of the South Coast and Devon/Cornwall/Wales not much further away either. Everythings pretty relaxed down here as well generally i've found.

I did 6 years in Bournemouth and loved it, big enough to be interesting but small enough to escape in 30 minutes and into beautiful countryside. Good bars and nightlife and as Matt says great access to the capital and other places.

I grew up around Chester and I really miss it. I may move back there. Maybe into North Wales, but well into North Wales, not in the borders.

I've always liked the Norfolk Broads too, and if I didn't have to work I'd look for somewhere around there that had a mooring so I could pootle around in boats.

In reality when retirement beckons it'll probably be the North East somewhere. The missus is a Geordie and has family up there. Probably somewhere on the coast, north of Newcastle. I'll toughen up to the weather over time.
