How does this google funding work for this forum? Does Korn get fractions of a pence each time I follow a link from this site, or does he get a commission of sorts if my clicking results in a purchase?

The reason I ask is that I have been spending a fair bit of time browsing a particular shop and it now appears regularly on the banners here. The result being I often click the link from BCF to said shop. It'd be nice to know that this action is yielding some pennies to keep this place ticking over.

It works by him enabling Google Adsense and embedding it on the forum in the footer and header.

Then, advertisers who want to drive traffic to their website / service enrol in to Google Adwords, which allows them to set a campaign up and a set of keywords. They then opt in to Google's "Entire Network" which displays ads on 3rd party websites, i.e. BCF.

You get paid per mille (1,000 impressions) a very small amount but get paid more when someone actually clicks the advert, as this costs the advertiser money and because Korn was so nice as to embed Google's ads here, he also gets a little cut.

What you're experiencing is called re targeting and works by the websites you visit storing a tracking cookie in your browser, which is then picked up by Google Adsense on here and you're shown very specific "re targeted" ads based on the cookies in your browser.

Re targeting is big bucks, as it allows the advertiser a very specific chance to make a sale by showing you exactly what you were just looking at today / last week / last month.

Google builds online profiles of users and learns about browsing behaviour and habits and tries to show the most relevant ads only, as this is how they have always made their money but the targeting gets better and more precise each time.

It works the same way on YouTube when you see adverts pop up and on Google searches when looking for something.

Every user on BCF will see different ads specifically targeted at them because of the cookies on their browsers are different to everyone else's, unless of course you're using an ad blocker Smile

Clear your browsing history regularly or use incognito modes to make each session not store cookies, coupled with an ad blocker and you won't see this stuff.

Facebook also works in a very similar way, those "Like Us" buttons / boxes on websites track you as well, which is why most ad blockers will block social icons / boxes / feeds by default.

It's all to do with the CIA, MI5, MI6, 1%ers, The Salvation Army and ASDA's masterplan to get into your PC.

Or it's a part of ADSENSE which snoops on where you go so it can osmosis you into buying shit from someone who is more interested in taking money off you than in actually helping you through life.

The cost of running the forum is financed by Korn's Courier work, moonlighting as a paperboy and the ads are just some beer money.

You'd be surprised what a site with this kind of traffic generates.

I read (on here) that an ad blocker i.e. Ghostery, will/may/can hurt your karma. Sad

You'd be surprised how much beer Korn can get through whilst modding away the wee small hours on here. Rolling Eyes

Interesting side note for anyone involved in a charity...

Google give charities about £80,000 a year in free ad words. You need to register your charity / charity you're involved with and enrol as a non profit. That's a fucking insane amount of money to be given to use.

There's very strict rules in keyword groups and ad spends in order to keep the account but if you spend some time checking it out and setting it up properly, you can sky rocket a charity's traffic / sales / donations.

They also give away free Google Apps for Work accounts with unlimited users and 30gb of free space per user.

Idea

So is it possible to write a little bit of code to tell a computer to continuously click the ads on your own website..?

I keep adblock switched off on BCF for two reasons.
1) The adverts are unobtrusive and very occasionally worth a click.
2) Korn deserves to get a bit of money out of BCF, it'd a bloody good forum.

I'm hoping for a 28 inch double-ended dildo.

Once again, over to you adsense.

Back in the day, people used to hammer competitors ads doing this. Nowadays, it's IP based, you will only get away with the one click per IP.

You could use an army of proxies or a bot net, but to be honest, clicking people's ads would be the least of your worries if you had the latter under your control.

Each to their own, I block ads everywhere because I object to my private browsing being used to market products to me that I couldn't give less fucks about.

Another interesting observation when using an ad blocker, your ratings are blocked by it and if you are that way inclined to see how your fellow BCF'ers rate your posts, you'd have to disable it to see them.

running a website like this isn't cheap

hosting
storage
backups
bandwidth usage
SSL certs
URL fee's
upgrades

all adds up to a hefty charges, I know I pay our server bills for the sites I run
so fair do's to Korn for raising funds to offset the costs of this site
personally I do click on some of the ad's
in particular the Ebay bikes advertised in the footer just for a look

What the fuck are "URL fee's"

BCF doesn't use ssl so doesn't need a cert and to be quite frank they cost peanuts. The bigger problem is server load.

As far as adsense goes, it used to be very lucrative, I'm not so sure now. At one point I had a single page that was paying my mortgage, which was pretty useful at the time since I was out of work. I think those days are long gone now and you have to work a bit harder and deal with ad blockers.

url's are normally renewed on an annual or x yearly basis

yes server load is the biggest expense but it all adds up
I'm lucky I can offset a lot of my costs with dedicated banner sales
I have quite a few company's and a rotating banner system as well as forum specific headers

Servers, CDNs, etc, etc.

It all adds up but BCF is pretty high traffic volume.

https://www.similarweb.com/website/bikechatforums.com

Having a website with 100,000 to 250,000 unique visitors a month is pretty good, estimated of course.

Although it's impossible to know exactly what the site is generating, it's not going to be peanuts and it's not going to be a fortune either.

Then there's the ad blockers and how many clicks the ads get, etc, etc.
