Been doing the practice on line.....................can't seem to get the hang of it ?? I clicked as soon as I saw a hazard, but got low scores. Are you supposed to click a few times for each hazard ?
When i checked my score it seems I'm not seeing a hazard lol.
Example............spotted car in left side street approaching the road I was on, I clicked as a " hazard" and carried on, but the closer he gets to my road, am I supposed to click more each time he gets closer ?
In real life you would notice him on the left and be ready for him in case he tries to pull out in front of you, and you can usually tell by his speed if he is going to stop or pull out (if you know what I mean).
Sorry but these clips and clicking don't seem real to me................I know it may be sending a message to new drivers to be aware, but to me it's looks like bollocks.
But.............I need some help in understanding what they actually want you to do ?
And would appreciate any tips.
Cheers

You click at the point when the situation becomes a hazard. So a car st a side street only becomes a hazard when it's clear they're pulling out in front etc.

If it is like the car test you are supposed to click for hazards, and click again if they develop. E.g, for the car on the side street, click as soon as you see it, just as you have been doing, then if it pulls out click again. Same for kids on the pavement, click as they could be a hazard, then click again if they move to cross. There is a knack to it and it teaches new drivers/riders nothing, but there you go. Good luck.

Itis exactly the same. There is a difference between potential and developing hazard, and that is what is trying to get you to recognise.

Two kids and a ball on the pavement are a potential hazard, whereas the ball bouncing into the road is a developing hazard.

Its the difference between having to be aware of something and having to do somehting about it.

The trouble is if you click too many times on a clip you will get nil point as the machine thinks you are guessing.

I orginially struggled with because I was picking things up when they were still potential hazards.

There is a knack to it and once you get it you'l be fine

Make any sense?

It's funny, but after you have been driving for a number of years, you don't think of them as 'hazards' as such - just a normal part of everyday riding / driving.

I think that this is the reason that experienced road users find it harder to pass the HPT than brand-new road users.

In real life, when you see the car approaching the junction, you would check your mirrors, slow down a little, maybe change your road position ('wiggle' manoeuvre) and get ready to brake if necessary - not reach for a mouse!

Think of it as a game, learn the rules, and practice.

Cheers, I spotted the car straight away probably 50 metres away from the corner, but didn't click. Only as he ( and me ) approached the corner did I click. And I scored low for not clicking when he was first spotted. But in real life...........I'm not sure that's right. Just seems a bit ott.

Thanks..............can't disagree with that last bit. Bit like driving games in arcades, didn't like em and was never any good at em. Sad

It's got nothing to do with real life, it's just a game. Do plenty of practice tests to see where the scoring zones are, and click-pause-click-pause-click. No more than three per hazard, and don't click too fast.

When I did it using the old potato-cam videos it appeared that you were only supposed to "recognise" the hazard just before avoiding action was necessary. That's a piss-poor system, but it's what you've got to deal with.

This is exactly what I was trying to say................you can express it better than me so thanks.
I don't think anything that is sending a message to new riders to be AWARE and prepared is a bad thing. The more they are prepared the better. But for an experienced driver................playing games on a video doesn't truly reflect your ability to recognise a hazard.
I mean if you have been driving hgv's for thirty years.........do you really need to prove you know the road rules Confused
It's practical riding experience I need, not clicking a fucking mouse.
Anyway, thems the rules and I better get practising on that mouse Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Thanks pal, you're right. I was just having a moan lol.
I know it's bollocks..............but I guess I need to accept it and get on with it.
Just not good with games on a computer, never have been. The thought of spending a minute on an x-box aaaaaaaaaaaargh, horror.

I started practicing for mine last night and on one video I scored zero because I spotted (and 'clicked on') the cyclists too soon, before the test considered it a hazard Crying or Very sad

When they first introduced it you could just click continuously and you'd be bound to spot the hazards. They closed that loophole.

However

You can still click 2 or 3 times (or maybe more!) without being penalised. Like you, I found I was clicking just too soon and scoring 0, so what I started doing was clicking when I saw the hazard, wait for a breath, then click again, then click again.

Doing that, I got almost maximum marks. It's all about practice. You'll get there.

This. It's just another expensive hurdle put between you and a full license. Click three times with a second or so between each as soon as you see a hazard.

Totally agree. Money making gaming exercise. I had been driving for a few years when I took my bike test but still had to sit it.

My 'clicks' were too quick at first but I learned to click once when I saw the threat, wait a second then 'click' again and again after two seconds. Don't click too often though as you will forfeit the point.

Its a load of bollocks! What you consider to be a hazard and what the computer/Mr DVSA considers to be a "hazard" are two very different things.

Basically click anytime you see something that looks like it might cause you to have to either change your speed or road position.

It isn't a test in hazard perception as such. It's a test in operating the DSA's software. If you fail it, it's because the rules of the game haven't been explained clearly enough, not because you're not spotting the hazards.

I was disqualified from two of the clips in mine for clicking too much and still passed by a reasonable margin. So don't panic if that happens.

Click when you see a potential hazard.....ie when a car approaches a junction. Then click again when the potential hazard turns in to a hazard that makes you need to slam on or swerve to avoid. Click twice at this point in case you are too good & the software can't keep up...... That's it, simple Laughing
