Thinking about getting one, what do people think of them?

Also trying to work out which one would fit my jacket (Spada Dolomite). Little bit confused as it looks like these were bundled with the jacket but then this one's being advertised as for the jacket. Any advice? Smile

Those are kinda token protection. A proper back protector must remain in place and offer much more stiffening.
It's another minefield.
I once considered a dedicated protector but they do have some bulk under a jacket too.
I have the black HD foam ones that came with the heingerick jackets ans a yellow HD foam one for a Dianse jacket which came without a back protector.

It depends on what you need to feel protected by. I forget I even need a back protector.
If I was into more track stuff then I'd revisit that opinion.
No idea of % of risk on track or on road. Bit style of riding may be a big factor. On the road I take it easy but on a track I take no prisoners. Cool

Wikipedia (which always knows best) reckons most spinal injuries are caused by the twisting of the hips or shoulders. TBH I just thought it was best to have something in case of a direct blow to your back.

I don't think I would use a dedicated protector, just because it would be too annoying to take on/off and bulk as you say. My jacket does have a thin bit of foam in the back pocket, could just convince myself that's good enough Thinking

I'd rather land on one than not.

They're just foam, buy big and cut down to size.

For example: https://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/content_prod/125190

Other vendors are available.

There most certainly is a risk, as I found out to my cost Sad

When I came off in the hedge incident, it was at low speed, but I landed flat on my back on the edge of the tarmac, where it met the grass verge. Result, two cracked vertebrae. My jacket had a foam "protector" that obviously wasn't up to the job.

And I still haven't invested in a decent back protector Embarassed

Bought a Knox Aegis. Like it.
Hardly ever leave home without it now.

There's a lot more stuff to hit if you fall off on the road than on a track.

I do accept that but there is the style of riding to consider.

I know it's hard to believe but I've been un-horsed many times but never injured my back.

I normally do my shoulders. Sad

I do think on a track one would be more committed and in more situations where loss of control would be possible.
That is why we love watching motorbikes racing. Smile

So on track without furniture you are 'possibly' more likely to come off. On a road with more furniture you are 'possibly' less likely to come off.

Like I said I cannot find any stats on % risk.

Anecdotal is acnecdotal

And it was the same for me. Until I did injure my back. Just sayin.

Been off once, landed on my ar$e, 18 months and counting of back pain Sad

Anyhoo think I've worked out what's going on, that GB link shows a Forcefield level 1 & 2 insert, and a ARMR Moto insert that doesn't look like it would fit (looking at the insert in my jacket & shape of the pocket).

Found what looks like the other insert that says it's for the jacket, even though it's universal Confused Gonna go ahead and order it.

Annoying if you wear a day pack.

WTF is a "Day Pack"

Do you mean a rucksack?

Is Day Pack the Metrosexual rhyming slang for Gay Pack?

You need a day pack for a hill climb? Either that was one big fuck-off hill, or you need to look for a different sport to try Razz

I initially assumed a 'Day Pack' was a calendar determined feminine device. Sick

Had to google.

Why are some folk determined to fill the 'Real' English language with Americano drollopery?

Anyone thinking of buying a back protector should also be thinking about an airbag.

I always try and put these RST inserts in all my gear. They're cheap and easy to fit most of the time and for just over a tenner i'd rather have it than not personally.

I crashed with it once years ago and landed square on my back after doing a superman impression - fairly confident it saved me from being a lot worse off on that occasion. Whether it would make much difference in other accident-situations i've no idea.

Cheap passive protection that you fit once and forget, versus expensive active protection that you need to keep clipping / unclipping from the bike.

Comparing apples versus submarines.

I used to have a Knox Contour protector - was great under a one piece leather suit but when I switched to 2 piece the lack of flexibility annoyed me - the bottom of it that covers your tail bone kept settling into where the suit zipped together.

I switched a Forcefield back protector like this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Forcefield-Back-Protector-L2K-/321943107064?hash=item4af54df5f8:g:m4cAAOSwo0JWK8pT and it moulds to the shape of your back and is much more comfortable.

Personally I wouldn't be without one - you only get one back and although it wont protect you against all injuries for the sake of £100 or so I'd rather have something there.

I quite like the Forcefield stuff too. I don't wear it all the time, but i've got the chest protector equivalent of that back protector and its barely noticable once you've been wearing it 5 minutes, even in quite tight one-piece leathers.

Not particularly cheap; but if other stuffs uncomfortable i'd definitely give them a try as an alternative Thumbs Up.

I have a furygan one. It's a big slab of d3o. Fits nicely under my kit, coveres more area, can remove, roll up and store in small luggage, giving you a jacket that is comfortable to wear off bike.

I have komine one which has both chest and back protector, easy to wear (zip + fasten belt). Chest protection is also important.

I have a Forcefield in one of my jackets but haven't bothered (yet) in the other two Dainese jackets. The fact that they need different shapes annoyed me seeing as I was hoping to just use the one between them. I had others before the Forcefield but they all made my back sweat like a pikey's pony in summer.
