I've never said I shouldn't had a tool cabinet, what I have said over and over is I think they are overpriced, especially for my needs.

I will not be keeping non tools, in it for me the point of a rolling tool chest is to keep your tools in one place and you can move them to where you are working. I will have racking and other organiser for parts/fastners/whatever. I have air tools and I use dads compressor, I have an impact wrench, cut off tool and a shot blaster. The only things I have actually used however is the tyre pump and blow line. So I'm not bothered about keeping them close.

It does 35-45mm, it's worked for everything so far.

In boxes/trays/organisers next to the Lathe, were else  why would I want them taking up space in a rolling tool chest when the can be next to the only spot where I will use them.

Our definitions of minimal differ, I'll have sockets up to 36, allen/torx/star bits/keys up to 12 (and a front wheel thing) spanners up to 24 + a shifter. A decent set of drivers, pliers etc. There are also many little bits and bobs such as feeler gauges, bearing pullers, fork damper holders etc. That I have, I can't think what I would be limited by when doing bog standard maintenance on a Modern bike.

As I said I'm not, I just said a £400 tool chest that can hold a metric tonne, is overkill for someone whose probable spend on tools will be about that.

TDM is actually Pretty light, 220kg is wet weight and it is lighter than any of it peers.

I bought earlier in the year a WERA KRAFTFORM SCREWDRIVER SET and it is probable the best screwdrivers i have ever owned (bloody i have got through some screwdrivers in my time). As these are your most used tool it pays to get a decent set.

No, abuse because I have very little tolerance for people talking rubbish.
To spend the money building a garage and then to want to put expensive tools on shelves whether they be hand tools, lathe tools or whatever is exasperating.
To not understand that your tool collection will grow significantly over the next few decades is exasperating.
To not realise that you will need impact sockets (so thats a 3rd set)to go with your air ratchet, normal sockets can have the unexpected comedy problem of shattering when used on air tools is exasperating.
To not realise that you will need two sets of spanners, one to hold a bolt and one the nut is exasperating.
You have a chance with a blank slate to build a decent workshop but you seem to have decided not to, you could buy two bottom cabs for example and have the worktop and vice above it but instead you have decided against it due to price which in the long term is minimal. You have also placed limits artificially on what you plan to do longterm. That is exasperating.
As to what you can't do bog standard maintenance wise on a Modern bike changing an electrical connector jumps to mind or checking tdc or anything electrical etc would you like me to continue? and yet you have the space and intelligence to do all these things.
Did I mention I have no tolerance? |
I already have a crimp set and a ratchet crimper, a multi meter and dial gauge too, I used etc. because I'm not going to list every single tool I have.
You've made you position clear, I'm still not spending £400 on a tool chest. Care to move on, or would you like to repeat yourself again?

I know that, I've found cheaper ones and have been looking at them, that one looks cheap and cheerful, I'm not sure if it would be too small, I'm going to measure dads one, and see what size that is.

Have a look for 'Bott' drawers on the bay, there's another company that makes similar too but the name escapes me at the minute. I've got one of my drawers loaded with ~20kg of drill bits and it glides in and out effortlessly. You don't get fleeced for them either because everyone else is looking for top boxes and roll cabs
Edit: I REALLY wouldn't go for cheap top box/roll cabs though, I'm not for overly extravagant purchases unless they're necessary but cheap drawers are wank in the long term, my Clarke box full of end Mills and stuff has started to collapse and bind the drawers... |

for those not wanting/affording to pay muchos £s for a chest, a cheap alternative is a Bisley Multi-Drawer cabinet....I find they're great for most hand tools, tough, easily movable with a sack barrow and you can take specific drawers with you in the motor if needed. Maybe not as safe as a big tool chest but it's not too hard to make them secure:-

You used to be able to pick them up dirt cheap but they're getting a bit harder to find now sadly. I've got about 4
